4 Tips For Helping a Loved One Improve Their Health.

Seeing someone you love in need of help can be upsetting. Perhaps they are in a bad place mentally, or are not taking care of themselves properly. You know they need to make a change, but it can be hard to step in and make a difference.

But no matter how difficult it may be, as a friend or relative, you have a duty of care to your loved one. You don’t want their health to decline, so it may require some tough love and careful consideration to turn their life around. When someone is neglecting their health, it’s often easier for the people around them to realise the impact it is having. So to enable you to boost their quality of life, here are a few great tips to help a loved one to improve their health.

BE SENSITIVE

Telling someone they are putting on weight, they’re drinking too much, or they look a bit worse for wear is not very tactful. It’s likely your loved one will see it as an insult and may push away from you. It’s important to be sensitive when raising the issue. Perhaps you could make more positive suggestions, such as starting a new physical hobby, or eating at a new healthy restaurant. It may be that some more tough love is required, particularly if their health and wellbeing is seriously at risk. Be upfront about it, without being judgemental or needlessly harsh.

DON’T ENABLE BAD HABITS

If your friend or relative is struggling with addictions or bad habits, you need to make sure you don’t enable these behaviours. For example, if they drink too much, you shouldn’t organise nights out in bars or clubs. Instead, go for a walk in the countryside, sit down in a coffee shop, or attend a pottery class instead. Don’t put them in situations where it is easy for them to indulge in their vices. If addiction is the problem, you should always advise your loved one to seek help from an organisation such as Addictions UK.

SET A GOOD EXAMPLE

You might have a perfectly healthy relationship with food and exercise, and see nothing wrong with indulging in a takeaway or having a lazy sofa day now and then. But if your friend needs more help, you should try to set a good example. Eat healthily around them and make a show of your active lifestyle. Your good habits may spread through osmosis and encourage your loved one to make a change.

EXERCISE TOGETHER

Starting an exercise regime is difficult, especially if you are struggling with your fitness. It is always easier when you have someone you love to work out with. Start exercising with your friend and make each other accountable. This might mean going for a run or a hike together, or signing up for a new fitness class or sport. It will be less challenging and more enjoyable for your loved one, and will help to kickstart them on their health improvement journey.
