If you’re a fan of getting out on a boat, kayaking down a river, or jet setting through the surf, visiting a water-logged destination somewhere in Europe is going to be the dream holiday for you. And thankfully, there’s quite a few amazing oceans, seas, and lakes across Europe! Here are four of the best destinations for water lovers to visit in 2024.
VENICE, ITALY
Venice is famous for the canals and waterways that run throughout the city. If you want to visit a place that still uses boat travel on a regular basis, make sure you book a flight to Venice this year. It’s a gorgeous destination slap bang in the middle of Europe, meaning it’ll also be easy to go to and fro from other famous water destinations, such as the Balkan Coast and Sardinia.
THE LAKE DISTRICT, UK
The Lake District is one of the most picturesque regions in the entirety of the UK, and if you’re a fan of any kind of outdoor sport, you’re going to find excellent facilities within the area. From rafting to rock climbing and a bit of crazy golf in between, you’ll be able to indulge in your love of water.
Book any of the amazing lake district hotels that operate around the eponymous lakes and you’ll never be far from a serene watery scene. The banks surrounding Lake Windermere also make for a great picnic and camping spot (although you need to make sure you’re in a designated area for the latter).
CRETE, GREECE
Greece is the perfect place for someone who wants to spend as much time out on the water as possible. And really, any place in Greece is going to allow you to hire a boat or yacht for the day and do whatever you want out on the waves. But we think special mention should go to Crete here. This is an island that’ll allow for both small and big boat adventures, as well as swimming and snorkelling, and you’ll never be too far from the beach at any one time.
THE ALGARVE, PORTUGAL
Portugal is an incredible country. The southern coast where you’ll find the Algarve region is one of the most beautiful places in the world. And we highly recommend heading here if you want to spend time in the water more than anywhere else. Really, the hotels in this region make the beach and the Atlantic Ocean very accessible. You can nip back and forth from your hotel in a matter of minutes on foot! Put your swimsuit on, put something light and cotton on top, and then head down there for the day with your sun lounger and a windbreak.
If you love spending time near or in the water, make sure you visit any of the four destinations above. A good water holiday lets you get in and out of the rippling waves as you please, and Europe makes for a relatively safe climate wherever you go.
