5 Things You Should Never Do On Instagram

After a very long time, I’ve been loving posting on Instagram more often now and I think it’s because of the fact that I’ve stopped caring about numbers and I’m concentrating more on my photography. I’ve had Instagram for almost 4 years now and I’ve pretty much seen loads of things and today I wanted to share with you 5 things you should never do on Instagram.

I’ve already mentioned it in a post but I find the follow/unfollow game completely ridiculous and disrespectful. The sad part about it is the fact that it doesn’t matter how many followers you have, you could have 300 or 30k followers and still people would do this.

You’ve the right to unfollow someone but unfollowing someone as soon as they follow you back is just plain rude, it sets a bad example to other bloggers and you don’t create a positive name for your blog either.

You can tag brands and some beauty/fashion accounts if your picture in question is related to those niches but I don’t see the point in tagging random accounts or worse people who you don’t even follow.

What I mean by random accounts is literally accounts that are typed randomly, they can be bloggers and normal people that have nothing to do with the pictures at all. I don’t think you’ll receive any likes, comments or followers from this technique.

You don’t have the obligation to leave a thoughtful comment, let alone an emoji so I find it annoying when people self promote their accounts or blogs on other people’s comment section. Sometimes I do feel bad removing these comments because they can instantly see I’ve removed their comments but there are so many social media platforms available so it’s not really ‘nice’ using someone’s else platform to promote your blog.

I’ve seen many people leave their caption blank which is a personal preference but I’d recommend to at least write a sentence or a word or two about the picture. The whole point of social media platforms is to be able to connect with your followers so if you don’t talk or connect with your followers then there wouldn’t be any interaction.

I’m at that fortunate point where I receive DMs (which is unreal!) and I’ve talked to so many lovely people but I’ve encountered some not so nice as well. They either start nicely and end the sentence *shall I say* in a rude manner or even worse some are completely inappropriate.

Finally, I don’t think I’m an expert at Instagram but these are the things I personally wouldn’t do and I wouldn’t recommend others to do them either.

  1. Loved reading this post! I’m currently trying to up my game with my instagram at the moment.. and the biggest bug bear of mine is the follow/unfollow issue. Thanks for the insightful information 🙂

  2. Definitely agree with these! In particular when people ask you to check out their profile (on any platform). If they just left a comment I probably would naturally check them out, but as soon as someone asks, it kinda puts me off them! :/ great post 😀 xx

  3. Yesssss. The follow to unfollow is out of hand. I’ve had 600 people do that in the last couple weeks. I just unfollow them right back, haha. #sorrynotsorry great tips!

  4. Despite the fact that I have so few IG followers (and have yet to post on the platform!), larger accounts still try to play the follow/unfollow game with me. Total waste of time on their part because I won’t them back since their intentions are so apparent.

  5. This follow/unfollow is the worst thing on instagram, tbh. I have really stopped caring about numbers now. Just post when I feel like otherwise I’ll lose sanity if i continue to chase numbers

  6. I loved this post! I totally agree with all of these things – especially the follow/unfollow, I find it SO rude xx

  7. I don’t know why anyone would tag a random account, like do they really think that works!? I always remove spammy comments from people promoting their own content or from those brands that ask literally everyone to be a brand ambassador. I’m so tired of being asked to promote sunglasses!! Grr…
    Great post! xx

    1. I know right! At first, it didn’t bother me but then it became quite annoying 😒 I remove spammy comments too, it’s so disrespectful! Thank you my lovely xx

  8. I’ve gotten to the same point i just stopped caring about numbers it takes all the joy out of posting because its can easily become the focus instead of just posting what i enjoy posting.

I’ve had so many people do the follow unfollow thing its really rude. i feel like social media has made some people become really selfish. Post what you enjoy but also support other people don’t be that person who follows and then unfollows someone when they follow you its just rude.

I’m all for supporting other people but i think brands or people trying to promote in my comments or just people leaving random comments that have nothing to do with what I’ve posted is annoying. I’ve seen this happen on friends accounts to i don’t get it.

    1. Me too, I hate it! I don’t block them though, if they’re doing it constantly then I might but for now – I just ignore them x

  9. I completely agree with these five points. I hate seeing images without a caption, I can never think of what I’m meant to say! Conversely, too long a caption is equally frustrating. I don’t have time to read it all but find I still do so that I can leave a thoughtful comment. So often I see a really long caption and someone comments “love the shades” which shows they haven’t read it at all. Great post as always lovely.

    Samantha x

    1. Yes! That’s very true, I only use Instagram when I have time and I make sure to use it everyday so I can check everyone’s pictures. It can be frustrating to read a long caption when you have little time to catch up so I totally understand it. Thank you so much my love x

  10. This game with follow and unfollow – I found it really ridiculous, as you already wrote. A person needs some time to get in touch with other Instagram users, but one should never forget about their own dignity and self-respect. Follow someone you like and you get inspired from, don’t just follow to get a follow back. Be yourself and people will follow.

  11. Love this, I agree with all of these! The follow/unfollow game drives me insane, especially when bloggers who complain about it do it🙄 Also the bot/spam comments are awful- I got one saying meow the other day and it was a picture of flowers I think? Love this post! X

  12. Follow unfollow is a huge pet peeve of mine! Whenever I get a new follower I check out their account and if it appeals to me, I follow back. It drives me insane when I see that they just unfollowed me to get their #’s up. I unfollow those accounts right away, which kind of defeats the entire purpose of what they were trying to achieve.

  13. I don’t have an insta account yet but I On not making mistakes like these when I do have one !!!

  15. I have to admit, the follow/unfollow issue is really annoying, I always follow people back but it seems like it doesn’t always work for me as I currently follow 300 more people than I have followers… Still though, I like my content!
