I’ve talked about discomfort several times on my blog and as to how it shouldn’t be brushed away as an instinct, but how can you distinguish between a situation where it saves you from harmful situations or where it limits you from growing? And that’s what I wanted to talk about in today’s post, I wanted to explore the emotion of discomfort and on ways to figure out when to trust it and not. Without further ado, let’s jump into the post!

CHECKING ON YOUR REACTIONS
It’s important to look at the moments when you are discomforted, it will give an insight as to why you felt the way you did as well as the things that triggered this emotion in the first place. It’s also as beneficial to look at your reactions in the aftermath.
I would say a lot of times discomfort brings defensiveness, because we don’t want to acknowledge the reason why we felt such a strong and overwhelming emotion to begin with. It’s way easier to be defensive and pretend not to have been discomforted than to reflect on it, because it would mean that you would have to reflect and evaluate both yourself and your surroundings.

LOOKING AT THE OTHER EMOTIONS SURFACING ALONGSIDE DISCOMFORT
What other emotions surface alongside discomfort? Sometimes discomfort can bring sadness, disappointment and even anger, whereas other times it might bring shame, embarrassment and pain. Identifying those emotions will help you figure out whether you have to get out of your comfort zone or whether you have to get out of a particular situation.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR OWN CIRCUMSTANCE & EXPERIENCES
Whether discomfort is a sign of growth or harm, you are the one who knows which one it is because your instinct is based on your circumstance and the experiences you’ve gone through.
Sometimes your body goes into fight-or-flight mode when you are in a stressful situation, but once you start being objective and self-aware, you will start noticing those triggers and you will know whether it was just your body being too cautious or whether it was your body alerting you of something particular.
You cannot base and apply other people’s discomfort, their tolerance for it and the way they go about it in your own life because we all have unique experiences. For instance, one person might consider discomfort as a sign of growing and expanding themselves due to their specific circumstance and past experiences, but you can’t apply that same logic to yourself if you are in a specific circumstance where discomfort is brought whenever you feel unsafe around your entourage. It’s all about knowing the context and more than anything, yourself.
