Hey Loves! I hope you’re having a lovely day! Instagram has been a huge mess lately whether it’s the new algorithm or any other issues, it has affected a lot of people. I’ve been affected for more than a year now from a lot of things and I know this post will be helpful for many people right now! I’ve shared my experience and how I fixed all these issues which means it’s going to be a *very* long post so grab something to eat & hope you find it helpful!

Broken Hashtags

This was the first issue I had on Instagram before last year, when it comes to engagement– the first two hours of your post are very crucial! You’ve to interact with as many accounts as possible in order for your post to get the maximum engagement. I get 80% of my engagement through hashtags and 20% through my followers. I interact with other accounts through the hashtags I use so when my picture didn’t appear under the hashtags I was using, I knew something was wrong.

I searched online and I found out I was using broken hashtags that’s the reason why my picture wasn’t appearing under any of the hashtags I was using. If you use one broken hashtag, it will affect the remaining ones as well.

The only way to find out if you’re using broken hashtags is to check the hashtags you’re using one by one, you might think you aren’t using any but there are a lot of hashtags that aren’t even explicit or derogatory but they are broken. Check your hashtags regularly and when using new ones, make sure to check they aren’t broken.

C’était le premier problème que j’ai eu sur Instagram avant l’année dernière, en matière d’engagement – les deux premières heures de votre publication sont très importantes! Vous devez interagir avec autant de comptes que possible pour que votre publication obtienne le maximum d’engagement. Je reçois 80% de mon engagement à travers les hashtags et 20% à travers mes adeptes. J’interagis avec d’autres comptes à travers les hashtags que j’utilise alors quand ma photo n’a pas apparu sous les hashtags que j’utilisais, je savais que quelque chose n’allait pas.

J’ai cherché en ligne et j’ai découvert que j’utilisais des hashtags cassés, c’est la raison pour laquelle ma photo n’apparaîssait pas sous aucun des hashtags que j’utilisais. Si vous utilisez un hashtag cassé, cela affectera les autres aussi.

La seule façon de savoir si vous utilisez des hashtags cassés est de vérifier les hashtags que vous utilisez un par un, vous pourriez penser que vous n’utilisez pas, mais il existe beaucoup de hashtags qui ne sont même pas explicites ou dérogatoires, mais ils sont brisés. Vérifiez vos hashtags régulièrement et lorsque vous utilisez de nouveaux, assurez-vous de vérifier qu’ils ne sont pas cassés.

 

As you can see, here is the difference between a ‘normal’ hashtag (left) and a broken one (right). When there isn’t any issues with a hashtag, you can see the related hashtags at the top and you’ll see a set of 9 pictures at the top under the section ‘Top Post’ and the recent pictures will be below under the section ‘Most Recent’. However with a broken hashtag, you won’t see any related hashtags or sections. All the pictures will be jumbled all together.

Comme vous pouvez le voir, voici la différence entre un hashtag «normal» (gauche) et un hashtag cassé (droite). Lorsqu’il n’y a aucun problème avec un hashtag, vous pouvez voir les hashtags connexes en haut et vous verrez un ensemble de 9 images en haut dans la section ‘Top Post’ et les images récentes seront sous la section ‘Le plus récent’. Cependant, avec un hashtag cassé, vous ne verrez aucun hashtags ou sections connexes. Toutes les images seront confondues ensemble.

 

Shadow Ban

Being shadow banned is the worst thing that can happen for an account because it has an impact on your engagement in terms of likes, comments or followers. I’d been shadow banned for over a year but I didn’t know at that time, you can now see multiple blog posts about shadow ban but when it happened to me 2 years ago, there weren’t anything useful – the only blog posts you were able to find were about broken hashtags.

As I mentioned earlier, I found out I was using broken hashtags and I thought that was one of the reasons why I had a low engagement on my posts. Even after I fixed this issue, I still didn’t have as much engagement as before. Don’t get me wrong, I got likes and people followed me here and there but I didn’t receive any comments which was unusual. I’d at least get 2 comments per post but there weren’t any comments and it didn’t matter how often I posted and how much I interacted with others.

At that point, I was discouraged because I thought people weren’t interested because I knew I could see my pictures under the hashtags I was using and that was the only issue I had with Instagram so for me everything was working properly. One day I was using my best friend’s phone and I decided to check my Instagram. Mind you, nobody knows that I’ve a blog so I decided to go through a hashtag (where my picture was under the ‘Top Posts’ section which meant it was one of the first nine pictures at the top) and then check my account. You won’t believe the shock I had, I couldn’t only see my picture under that hashtag but I couldn’t see any of my pictures under all the hashtags I was using! When I checked on my phone, everything was fine but when I checked through my bf’s phone – I couldn’t see anything!

Obviously I was doing my research on the internet to find out what was going wrong but I couldn’t find a single article about it. At that time, the term shadow ban wasn’t even known because people weren’t aware of this issue. Then to make sure this was something legit and not a glitch on my friend’s phone, I asked a number of bloggers who were following me to check my pictures under the hashtags I was using, and I did the same thing with a couple of other friends’ with their phones as well.

I found out that people who followed me were able to see my pictures but not other users. As I said previously, I get my engagement through my hashtags and the likes I was getting were from accounts who were following me and the ones who I’d interacted with. Basically it meant that I couldn’t get any exposure and people wouldn’t be able to find my account unless I interacted with them.

Obviously, your girl had to do find out why it was happening and I didn’t even care about my Instagram at this point – I wanted to know what this thing was and why it was happening.

As you all know, there is a feature on Instagram where you can advertise your account/posts. Those are the ads/sponsored posts you see on your timeline where you can gain extra exposure and you’ve to pay a certain amount of money for that. By using hashtags, people can gain exposure and get engagement for free which isn’t really a benefit for Instagram whereas if you were using the ad feature, you’d have to pay. This is the reason why the algorithm is a lot more difficult to work with and a lot of accounts are (being) shadow banned because they target accounts which have less than 10k/18k followers in order for you to use this feature.

I found this information through an inside source (I completely sound like a gossip website lol) so I can’t say it’s true but at the same time I can’t deny it either when you check the statistics..

Now, let’s talk about how I fixed it! I decided to take long breaks between each picture I was posting, it doesn’t mean you’ve to post once a month like me haha! For instance if you were posting two times per day then post a couple of times per week, you’ve to decrease the number of times you post and take a gap when posting each picture. I never posted constantly on Instagram but when I was taking a gap, I definitely saw a difference.

In addition, change the set of hashtags you’re using every time you post a picture! For me, hashtags are everything when it comes to engagement so I’ve to make sure that my hashtags are working properly. I always change a couple of hashtags for each pictures and it works amazingly!

Instead of adding your hashtags in a second comment, add your hashtags in the first comment – adding the hashtags in a second comment will create issues and your hashtags won’t work. Also, you can use this website to check if your recent post isn’t shadow banned and all the hashtags you’ve added aren’t broken. This website is legit and a life saver!

Être ‘shadow ban’ est la pire chose qui peut se produire pour un compte car il a un impact sur votre engagement en termes de likes, de commentaires ou d’adeptes. J’avais été ‘shadow ban’ pendant plus d’un an, mais je ne savais pas à ce moment-là, vous pouvez maintenant voir plusieurs articles de blog sur ce sujet, mais quand cela m’est arrivé il y a 2 ans, il n’y avait rien d’utile, les seuls articles que vous avez pu trouver concernaient des hashtags cassés.

Comme je l’ai mentionné plus tôt, j’ai découvert que j’utilise des hashtags cassés et je pensais que c’était l’une des raisons pour lesquelles j’avais un faible engagement sur mes images. Même après avoir réglé ce probleme, je n’avais toujours pas autant d’engagement qu’auparavant. Ne me méprenez pas, j’ai eu des likes et les gens m’ont suivi ici et là mais je n’ai reçu aucun commentaire qui etait inhabituel. J’avais au moins 2 commentaires par poste, mais il n’y avait pas de commentaires.

À ce moment-là, j’ai été découragé parce que je pensais que les gens n’étaient pas intéressés parce que je savais que je pouvais voir mes photos sous les hashtags que j’étais en train d’utiliser et c’était le seul problème que j’avais avec Instagram, donc pour moi tout fonctionnait correctement. Un jour, j’utilise le téléphone de mon meilleur amie et j’ai décidé de vérifier mon Instagram. Entendez-vous, personne ne sait que j’ai un blog alors j’ai décidé de passer par un hashtag (où ma photo était sous la section «Top Posts», ce qui signifiait que c’était l’une des neuf premières images en haut) et ensuite vérifier mon compte . Vous ne croirez pas au choc que j’ai eu, je ne pouvais pas seulement voir ma photo sous ce hashtag mais je ne pouvais voir aucune de mes images sous tous les hashtags que j’utilisais! Quand j’ai vérifié sur mon téléphone, tout allait bien mais quand j’ai vérifié sur le téléphone de mon amie – je ne pouvais rien voir!

De toute évidence, je faisais mes recherches sur Internet pour savoir ce qui n’allait pas, mais je ne pouvais pas trouver un seul article à ce sujet. À cette époque, le terme «shadow ban» n’était même pas connu ni existait parce que les gens n’étaient pas conscients de ce probleme. Ensuite, pour m’assurer que c’était quelque chose de légitime et pas un problème sur le téléphone de mon amie, j’ai demandé à un certain nombre de blogueurs qui me suivaient de vérifier mes photos sous les hashtags que j’utilisais, et j’ai fait la même chose avec quelques autres amis aussi avec leurs téléphones.

J’ai découvert que les personnes qui m’ont suivi pouvaient voir mes photos, mais pas d’autres utilisateurs. Comme je l’ai dit précédemment, j’ai mon engagement à travers mes hashtags et les likes que j’avais gagnés provenaient de comptes qui me suivaient et de ceux avec qui j’avais interagi. Fondamentalement, cela signifiait que je ne pouvais pas avoir d’exposition et que les gens ne pouvaient pas trouver mon compte à moins d’avoir interagi avec eux.

Comme vous le savez tous, il existe une fonctionnalité sur Instagram où vous pouvez annoncer votre compte/publications. Ce sont les messages publicitaires que vous voyez sur votre compte où vous pouvez augmenter votre exposition et que vous devez payer un certain montant pour cela. En utilisant des hashtags, les gens peuvent se développer et obtenir un engagement gratuitement, ce qui n’est pas vraiment un avantage pour Instagram, alors que si vous utilisiez la fonctionnalité d’annonce, vous devriez payer. C’est la raison pour laquelle l’algorithme est beaucoup plus difficile à utiliser et beaucoup de comptes sont ‘shadow banned’ car ils ciblent des comptes qui ont moins de 10k/18k abonnés afin que vous puissiez utiliser cette fonctionnalité.

J’ai trouvé cette information à travers une source intérieure donc je ne peux pas dire que c’est vrai, mais en même temps, je ne peux pas le nier non plus lorsque vous vérifiez les statistiques.

Maintenant, parlons de la façon dont je l’ai réparé! J’ai décidé de prendre de longues pauses entre chaque image que je poste, cela ne veut pas dire que vous devez publier une fois par mois comme moi, haha! Par exemple, si vous publiez deux fois par jour donc publiez quelques fois par semaine, vous devez diminuer le nombre de fois que vous publiez et prendre un écart lors de la publication de chaque image. Je n’ai jamais posté constamment sur Instagram, mais lorsque je prenais un écart, j’ai vraiment vu une différence.

En outre, modifiez l’ensemble des hashtags que vous utilisez chaque fois que vous publiez une image! Pour moi, les hashtags sont tout en ce qui concerne l’engagement, alors je dois m’assurer que mes hashtags fonctionnent correctement. Je change toujours quelques hashtags pour chaque image et ça fonctionne incroyablement!

Au lieu d’ajouter vos hashtags dans un deuxième commentaire, ajoutez vos hashtags dans le premier commentaire – en ajoutant les hashtags dans un deuxième commentaire créera des problèmes et vos hashtags ne fonctionneront pas. De plus, vous pouvez utiliser ce site Web pour vérifier si votre publication récente n’est pas interdite et tous les hashtags que vous avez ajoutés ne sont pas interrompus. Ce site est légitime!

 

Chronological Timeline

A lot of people have complained they couldn’t see their timeline in a chronological order because of the new algorithm which is still the case. However, people started to see old posts from 3/4 days ago (or even more) which is definitely an issue. As of now, there are two reasons why this is happening, firstly you may have followed a lot of accounts in a bunch or you follow more than 200 followers.

When following, make sure you don’t follow everyone in one-go. I know it might happen when you’re doing ‘follow trains’ but I’m pretty sure others would understand if you don’t follow them straightaway. Taking a break when following accounts is important, if you follow a couple of accounts everyday – you’ll see old posts on your timeline every single day. When taking a break, you’ll notice that you won’t see any old posts. If you check properly, you’ll see that the old posts that appear on your timeline are from the accounts you’ve followed recently.

This one is a bit tricky since you might see old posts if you follow more than 200 followers. I’d never say to anyone to unfollow people because I find that rude and disrespectful, it is what it is and you’ve to get used to it. Obviously, it doesn’t mean if you follow more than 200 followers you’ll see old posts! It’s different for every account but these are the reasons for most accounts.

Beaucoup de gens se sont plaints qu’ils ne pouvaient pas voir leur timeline dans un ordre chronologique en raison du nouvel algorithme qui est toujours le cas. Cependant, les gens ont commencé à voir les anciens photos à partir de 3/4 jours (ou même plus), ce qui est certainement un problème. À l’heure actuelle, il y a deux raisons pour lesquelles cela se produit, d’abord, vous avez peut-être suivi beaucoup de comptes ou vous suivez plus de 200 suiveurs.

Quand vous suivez, assurez-vous de ne pas suivre tout le monde en une seule fois. Je sais que cela pourrait se produire lorsque vous effectuez des «suivis des trains», mais je suis plutôt sûr que d’autres comprendraient si vous ne les suivez pas immédiatement. Prendre une pause lors de la suite des comptes est important, si vous suivez quelques comptes tous les jours – vous verrez les anciens photos sur votre timeline tous les jours. En prenant une pause, vous remarquerez que vous ne verrez aucun ancien photo. Si vous vérifiez correctement, vous verrez que les photos anciens qui apparaissent sur votre timeline proviennent des comptes que vous avez suivis récemment.

Celui-ci est un peu difficile car vous pourriez voir des photos anciens si vous suivez plus de 200 abonnés. Je ne dirais jamais à personne de ne pas suivre les gens parce que je trouve que c’est impoli et irrespectueux, c’est ce que c’est et il faut s’y habituer. Évidemment, cela ne signifie pas que si vous suivez plus de 200 abonnés, vous verrez les anciens photos! Il est différent pour chaque compte, mais ce sont les raisons de la plupart des comptes.

 

Low engagement

Some accounts have noticed a decrease on their engagement and they weren’t affected by a shadow ban nor using broken hashtags neither. This is a result of the new algorithm which I mentioned previously for the shadow ban.

The only solution is to try to interact with as many accounts as possible, leave thoughtful comments and like a couple of pictures – you’ll see a difference. You’ve to understand if you want people to follow you, you’ve to follow back. You will not get anything without doing something.

Certains comptes ont remarqué une diminution de leur engagement et ils n’ont pas été affectés par une interdiction de l’ombre ni par des hashtags cassés non plus. C’est le résultat du nouvel algorithme que j’ai mentionné précédemment pour le shadow ban.

La seule solution est d’essayer d’interagir avec autant de comptes que possible, de laisser des commentaires et aimer quelques images – vous verrez une différence. Vous devez comprendre si vous voulez que les gens vous suivent, vous devez faire de meme. Vous n’obtiendrez rien sans faire quelque chose.

 

Deleted Account

Unfortunately, some people had their account deleted for no apparent reasons, this happened last year and recently as well. Some users were able to get back their accounts but some were deleted permanently which is pretty sad. Contact Instagram and try your best, I don’t have any solution apart from starting a new account, don’t get discouraged – I’m pretty sure you can beat Instagram!

Malheureusement, certaines personnes ont supprimé leur compte sans raisons apparentes, cela s’est produit l’année dernière et récemment aussi. Certains utilisateurs ont réussi à récupérer leurs comptes, mais certains ont été supprimés en permanence, ce qui est très triste. Contactez Instagram et faites de votre mieux, je n’ai aucune solution à part le démarrage d’un nouveau compte, ne vous découragez pas – Je suis sûr que vous pouvez battre Instagram!

 

Layout

A couple of weeks ago, people were talking about a ‘four pics layout’ which I didn’t understand anything of it at. When I was talking about it with my friends from France, they sent me a link to a french website and I understood by what they meant when saying ‘4 pics’.

In general, Instagram is going to change the layout of the grid – it won’t be 3 pictures in a row anymore but 4! The article was saying that some accounts were already starting to see the changes but from what I gather from an ‘inside source’, Instagram isn’t planning to change the layout anytime soon and it’s just for ‘publicity’.  I don’t know if it’s true or not but just to be safe, if you’ve a specific Instagram theme – make sure it doesn’t change drastically if the layout changes.

Il y a quelques semaines, les gens parlaient d’une «disposition de quatre photos» dont je ne comprenais rien. Quand j’étais en train de parler avec mes amis qui etaient en France, ils m’ont envoyé un lien vers un site internet français et j’ai compris par ce qu’ils voulaient dire en disant «4 photos».

En général, Instagram va changer la mise en page de la grille – il ne sera plus 3 images de suite mais 4! L’article disait que certains comptes commencaient déjà à voir les changements, mais à partir de ce que je rassemble d’une «source intérieure», Instagram ne prévoit pas de modifier la mise en page rapidement et c’est juste pour la «publicité». Je ne sais pas si c’est vrai ou non, mais juste pour être en sécurité, si vous avez un thème Instagram spécifique – assurez-vous qu’il ne change pas radicalement si la mise en page change.

 

Hack

A couple of weeks ago, millions of users got hacked on Instagram (you can read it here) and my account was one of them. I had posted a pic after a month and I was interacting with other accounts to get the maximum engagement as possible and after 40 mins I couldn’t log into my account. Instagram was asking me to enter my phone number so they could send me a security code in order to confirm it was my account. At first, I didn’t understand what was going on because it never happened to me, obviously I entered my phone number and was able to access my account afterwards – this process is called a two-factor authentication (and I didn’t even turn on this option in my settings).

After that, it was just a nightmare! My old posts started to disappear one by one, it went from 90 to 55 posts so I straightaway went to Twitter to check if something similar had happened to anyone else (ps. if you’re having issues with an app, internet or something in general – use Twitter as a search engine, it will save you a lot of time!) but there were zero results. Then I tweeted about it hoping that somebody will come forward, a lovely blogger answered me but apart from that nothing.

At this point, I thought I was hacked and my old posts were gone forever. I was preparing myself for the worse because at this point I already had a lot of issues with Instagram (which I mentioned previously: broken hashtags & shadow ban). I changed my password and didn’t really check Instagram afterwards, I was getting notifications so I knew my account was still active.

The next day, a lot of people had the same issue which meant I wasn’t the only one in this situation. Some accounts experienced the same thing as me, some didn’t go through the two-factor authentication but their posts disappeared or unfortunately some accounts were deleted. My posts reappeared the day after so when it comes to your posts disappearing, they will reappear one or two days later so this isn’t an issue at all.

The main issues coming from this hack was the lack of engagement, the account being shadow banned or deleted. Personally, I didn’t upload any pictures after the hack but I’ve already been shadow banned and have a low engagement so I don’t think I’m going to face anything new. I already mentioned the solutions for all these issues so you can check them above.

Quelques semaines plus tot, des millions d’utilisateurs ont été piratés sur Instagram (vous pouvez le lire ici) et mon compte était l’un d’entre eux. J’avais posté une photo après un mois et j’etais en train d’interagir avec d’autres comptes pour obtenir le maximum d’engagement possible et après 40 minutes, je ne pouvais pas me connecter à mon compte. Instagram m’a demandé d’entrer mon numéro de téléphone afin qu’ils puissent m’envoyer un code de sécurité afin de confirmer que c’était mon compte. Au début, je ne comprenais pas ce qui se passait parce que cela ne m’est jamais arrivé, évidemment, j’ai entré mon numéro de téléphone et j’ai pu accéder à mon compte par la suite – ce processus s’appelle une authentification à deux facteurs (et je n’ai même pas activez cette option dans mes paramètres).

Après cela, c’était juste un cauchemar! Mes anciens images ont commencé à disparaître un par un, il est passé de 90 à 55 postes, alors je me suis immédiatement rendue sur Twitter pour vérifier si quelque chose de similaire est arrivé à quelqu’un d’autre (ps. si vous rencontrez des problèmes avec une application, Internet ou quelque chose en général – utilisez Twitter comme moteur de recherche vous épargnera beaucoup de temps!) mais il n’y avait aucun résultat. Ensuite, j’ai tweeté à ce sujet en espérant que quelqu’un se présentera, un blogueur aimable m’a répondu, mais en dehors de rien.

À ce stade, j’ai pensé que j’étais piraté et mes anciens messages étaient partis pour toujours. Je me préparais pour le pire parce que, à ce stade, j’ai déjà eu beaucoup de problèmes avec Instagram (ce que j’ai déjà mentionné: hashtags cassés et shadow ban). J’ai changé mon mot de passe et je n’ai pas vraiment vérifié Instagram par la suite, j’avais des notifications alors je savais que mon compte était toujours actif.

Le lendemain, beaucoup de gens ont eu le même problème et cela signifiait que je n’étais pas la seule dans cette situation. Certains comptes ont eu la même chose que moi, certains n’ont pas traversé l’authentification à deux facteurs mais leurs photos ont disparu ou malheureusement certains comptes ont été supprimés. Mes photos ont réapparu le lendemain, alors quand il s’agit de vos images, ils reparaîtront un ou deux jours plus tard, ce n’est donc pas un problème.

Les principaux problèmes liés à ce hack étaient le manque d’engagement, le compte étant shadow banned ou supprimé. Personnellement, je n’ai pas téléchargé d’images après le piratage, mais j’ai déjà été interdit et j’ai un faible engagement, donc je ne pense pas que je vais faire face à quelque chose de nouveau. J’ai déjà mentionné les solutions pour toutes ces questions afin que vous puissiez les vérifier ci-dessus.

 

Obviously for better security, I’d recommend turning on the ‘two-factor authentication’ setting for your account. Go to your settings > Two-factor Authentication and then turn on the ‘Require security code’.

Évidemment, pour une meilleure sécurité, je recommanderais l’activation du paramètre «Authentification à deux facteurs» pour votre compte. Accédez à vos paramètres> Authentification à deux facteurs, puis activez “Exiger un code de sécurité”.
