If you are serious about your blog, I would highly recommend to buy your domain. Not only will it show that you want to take your blog to the next level but it will also help you receive more opportunities whether it be paid or gifted. When it comes to buying your domain, you have two options. You can either upgrade to a paid plan if your website is on a hosting service platform e.g. WordPress.com or go self-hosted. Note that if your website is on Blogger, you have the option to buy your domain name.
I think the decision of choosing which option to go for is completely up to you. It totally depends on your situation, goals and personal preference. I’ve written a post about comparing both a self-hosted website and a paid plan on WordPress.com so I would recommend to check out that post if you are interested. In today’s post, I wanted to share with you when is the right time to go self-hosted. If you are thinking about going self-hosted then this post is for you! As always, if you are interested – keep on reading!

WHEN YOUR TRAFFIC IS SKYROCKETING
The amount of traffic I’m talking about in this case is subjective. What I consider a significant amount of traffic might be a small amount of traffic to you and vice versa. But if you personally feel that your website is generating a huge amount of traffic per month then it’s probably time to go self-hosted. One of the reasons why I would recommend going self-hosted is for the ad revenue.
You will be able to earn at least hundred dollars regularly per month depending on the ad program, CPM and monthly page views/sessions your website receive. Remember that when you go self-hosted, your traffic will drop drastically which is completely normal. It happens to every blogger who goes self-hosted. Note that your blog posts won’t appear in the WordPress reader anymore.
It will definitely take time to go back to your regular traffic which might take weeks, months or even years depending on your sources of traffic. You might wonder if going self-hosted is worth the hassle if you have to start everything from scratch again but in the grand scheme of things, having a self-hosted website will allow you to generate more money in terms of ad which is not really possible on a hosting service platform.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you can’t earn money on a hosting service platform but when it comes to ad – your best bet is a self-hosted website. What you will earn in one month on a self-hosted website will take a couple of years on a hosting service platform and I’m not even exaggerating in the slightest. Once you have gone self-hosted, build your traffic from scratch again.

WHEN YOU WANT TO MONETISE YOUR BLOG
As I mentioned in the previous point, if you want to monetise your website then the best option would be to go self-hosted. I’m not only talking about ad revenue but for any form of monetisation on your blog. You do have the option to monetise your blog on a hosting service platform depending on the plan you go for but if you want to access the entire features then you need to go self-hosted.
You can definitely find alternative options but in some cases, you will need to have a self-hosted website. For instance, some paid opportunities will require you to have a self-hosted website because they want to add a specific code into your website’s file which can only be accessed if you have a self-hosted website. Some opportunities are very strict when it comes to that aspect so unless you have a self-hosted website, you will have to turn them down.

WHEN YOU ARE FINANCIALLY READY
I think this is something that a lot of people don’t really mention when it comes to self-hosted websites and that is the financial side. Going self-hosted and maintaining a self-hosted website is pretty expensive in general. Depending on the web host you choose, the price can vary from £120 to £500 – that’s how expensive it is! The price can even go higher depending on the renewal price and web host in question.
It’s definitely not an affordable cost and you need to make sure that you are ready to do it before you make your big decision. One of the common reasons why most bloggers delete their websites is not because they weren’t able to generate traffic or didn’t love their blogs anymore, it was because they weren’t able to keep up with the cost. Unless you are able to earn that amount from your blog or are able to spend that much money on your blog – make sure to think twice.

& WHEN YOU SIMPLY FEEL READY
If you feel ready to go self-hosted or are even thinking about going self-hosted then that means it’s time to move to the next step! Being on a hosting service platform isn’t a bad thing at all, you definitely can access most of the features & functionalities of a self-hosted website. However, at the end of the day – it’s not the same. Maintaining a self-hosted website takes a lot of time and effort since you are the one who has to do and check everything when it comes to every single aspect of your website.
You need to make sure that you can dedicate time to work on your blog because as I said, it’s not an affordable option depending on your situation and budget. It’s not only a big responsibility but it’s a huge commitment as well. Having a self-hosted website should be every blogger’s end goal, it doesn’t matter when you do it. As long as you do it when you feel fully ready – that’s what matters.

I was looking forward to go self-hosted but as you stated it will take months to even reach the amount of small traffic I have on my blog. Earning through ads is definitely a plus point but its a lot of effort to regain the trust and traffic that I had built organically. I am confused what to do now. Plz help me 🥺
It’s definitely a huge decision and can be very confusing & overwhelming! Some bloggers make the mistake of going self-hosted early whilst others make the mistake of waiting a long time.
Let’s just say that you don’t receive a lot of traffic on your blog, going self-hosted won’t have an impact on your blog since you don’t really get a lot of traffic therefore it will be easier to build your traffic from scratch again.
On the other hand, let’s say you are able to gain more than 50,000 page views per month which is a huge number! Not going self-hosted would be a waste as you will be able to access a lot more features and opportunities. Even if your traffic drops significantly, you will still be able to generate a decent amount of traffic as your usual traffic was quite high in the first place. Then you can start building it again.
In general, it’s such a complicated process and even the part about going self-hosted can be quite daunting if you don’t have any help. The only thing I would say is make sure to do your research! Hope that was helpful ❤️
thanks for this! but I have a query– it won’t appear in the wordpress reader ifyou go self hosted? I upgraded my blog to the personal plan. So does that mean mine won’t show up in the reader?
My pleasure babe! ❤️ Upgrading your plan isn’t the same as going self-hosted, they are completely two different things so no, your posts will show up in the WordPress reader.
So if I go self-hosted, then I wouldn’t be under the WordPress umbrella? I would have to use another hosting service to be self hosted?
Yes, on top of that you will have to install wordpress cpanel wherever you are hosted. Also you will have to install the jetpack plugin therenif you want to show your posts in wordpress reader
Yes! You will be under WordPress.org which is a completely different platform and the web host you go for. You can access some of the features of WordPress.com by using the jetpack plugin but even in that case, some features will be limited.
OK gotcha 🙂 thank you
You’re very welcome 😊
Very nice. I had been looking for such kind of information and you really wrote at the right time. Thanks.
So glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much for reading 😊
Useful information !!
Hey so by opting for self hosted version , my content will not be shown on wordpress reader, then how will the traffic will generate??? By google search???
So glad it was useful! ❤️ You will have to generate traffic organically (as you said search engines) and/or through social media.
So what about friends I made here!??
Neither they will able to see my Post nor I will be able to see theirs???
If you install the jetpack plugin on your (self-hosted) website, you will be able to read their posts and they will be able to read your posts as well. But as I mentioned in the post, your posts will stop appearing the WordPress reader as your website isn’t in their platform anymore.
Hey thanks for replying and helping out💗💗💗💗
No problem hun 😘❤️

How is buying a domain on Blogger different from buying a domain on WordPress?
Blogger and WordPress.com are completely two different platforms. With WordPress.com, you have paid plans where each plan gives access to a number of features & functionalities along with your domain. With Blogger, you don’t have any plan nor extra features or functionalities when you buy a domain.
Thank you so much for replying. Can I use AdSense if I buy domain on Blogger?
Yes, you can!
Thank you so much for replying! Have a nice day!😊
You’re very welcome! Thank you, you too 😊
