There are so many ways to monetise your blog and one of them is to use ads. You can earn money by placing ads on your website, the ads are usually placed on the sidebar or at the end of your blog posts depending on your preferences.
There are so many types of ads, certain ads work per click & per impression and certain per click only. In addition, the rate varies depending on the program. In this post, I’m going to compare two programs which are Google AdSense and WordAds.

WHY WORDADS & ADSENSE?
The reason why I’ve chosen both of these programs is because WordAds is available for WordPress.com and self hosted websites (WordPress) whereas Google AdSense is available for both Blogger & self-hosted websites and not for WordPress.com. Many of you are still using WordPress.com like me and some of you might be thinking of going self hosted in the future/are already self-hosted or simply use Blogger.
I know loads of bloggers prefer self hosted websites when it comes to ads because there are a lot more programs available with good rates but that’s not the case for WordPress.com – there is only one program available and you’ve to upgrade to either a premium or business plan in order to place ads on your blog.
WordPress.com is a great platform as it is and so many bloggers tend to move platforms because of these small restrictions although they’d have preferred to stay on WordPress a lot longer so this will be a good opportunity to see if it’s worth going self hosted only for this reason!
THE APPLICATION PROCESS
Both of these programs application process are very simple and easy however it may take awhile for your application to get approved. AdSense takes 7 days minimum and if you don’t get approved then you’ll receive a reply within 3 days. Compared to AdSense, WordAds works pretty quickly – you’ll get accepted immediately!
Don’t get disappointed or disheartened if you don’t get approved the first time, be patient. It’s not possible to earn meaningful earnings if your traffic levels are low, you’ll need to have at least thousands of page views each month and 1000 unique visitors.

TYPES OF ADS
AdSense targets both cost per click and cost per impression however with WordAds, it’s only cost per impression which can be a good or bad thing depending on your traffic.

WordAds has only two ad placement options which is at the end of a blog post or page whereas with AdSense, you’ve different sizes and formats. You can place them in your header, sidebar, at the end of a blog post, in between a post, etc.

RATES
Now we’re moving to the exciting part which is the rate! Both programs take into consideration various different things such as the location of your visitors, quality of content, number of visitors, etc. when calculating your earnings.
To be honest, there are no definitive answer because both of these programs provide different types of ads and calculate their earnings based on different factors. Here’s an example of WordAds, if you get 5000 to 6000 views on your website which we will convert to 6000 impressions on your blog ads for the sake of this post – you’ll earn between $0.50 to $1.50.
With AdSense, if you get 6000 views on your website which we will convert to 6000 impressions on your blog ads – you’ll earn between $6 to $6.50. This calculation is based on the average click per impression rate which is $1 to $1.50 per 1000 impressions for AdSense. However, as you can see with WordAds – it’s less than the average rate. Plus, the rate isn’t fixed either and will fluctuate every month (for the worst).

PAYMENT
Both WordAds and AdSense pay monthly, WordAds pays via PayPal whereas AdSense pays via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT), EFT via Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), wire transfer, checks, and Western Union Quick Cash. Payments are sent towards the end of the following month for both programs. If you earned less than $100 in a given month, your earnings will carry over to the next month instead.

CONCLUSION
Both are contrasting to each other when it comes to certain aspects such as the ad placements, rate and types of ads. Both are focused on different things but in general, there aren’t any huge differences, it all depends on your blog, traffic and preferences. If you’re not ready to go self-hosted yet but still want to earn money through ads then WordAds is a good opportunity because you’ll still be able to earn a couple of bucks per month.

Is there a reason why you aren’t using a self hosted website?
Cheers
Merci ma belle! No there isn’t any particular reason, I want to improve on my content & social media first and I plan on going self hosted afterwards x
Keep sharing, stay motivated…
Thank you!
Very helpful.
Glad you found it helpful! x
I am a new blogger. Abt d adsure I thought it was free, the website is demanding 1600
Thanks for this information. I have a long way to go to get that many views, but I moved to the premium plan now. 😊 I’ve started getting the word out through social media, family, and friends too. I’ll be placing my business card at local shops. I’m just starting a new job too, so I’ll be busy. Thanks again for the clear explanation of how both programs work. Have a great day!
My pleasure Debbie! Ah that’s amazing, so happy to hear that 💗 you too, have a great day x
Merci beaucoup pour ton article vraiment intéressant. Je ne connaissais pas… 💞 Bisous
Tout le plaisir est pour moi! De gros bisous 💗
💞💞💞😍😘
Finally someone answered my prayers 🤣I have been waiting to a blogger to write about these two monetizing machines so I can decide what I want. At the moment I’m with WordPress.com , upgraded to premium and finally got WordAds but still not monetizing (low traffic) and i’ m planning to upgrade to business today so I can have access to Adsense and this post came in 😘😘 . Please tell me should I still go on with upgrading ? Thank you in advance
Haha I’m so glad! 😂 I use the premium plan and I don’t plan on upgrading to the business plan but there are so many features available for both plans so I guess it all depends on your preferences 💗
😂Sorry I’m asking to much question but please can you break it down 🙏
No problem lol! The business plan has a lot of features compared to the premium plan in terms of uploading a theme, downloading plugins, etc. (check the plans for more details) but it’s not equivalent to a self-hosted website. Personally for me, when comparing the prices the business plan is not worth it however it all depends on your preferences – you’ve to take into consideration your website, traffic, followers and content. If you aren’t ready to go self-hosted yet and feel the business plan will bring you lots of benefits then go for it! Hope that was clear and helpful 💗
Oh it did help a lot. Thank you doll😘😘
My pleasure love 😘
Thank you so much for sharing!
Definitely going to apply for wordads now!
My pleasure love! x

Thank you ☺️
This post is super helpful! I finally added adsense to my self hosted site, I actually got approved pretty quickly, in about 2 days!
Thank you lovely! Ahh that’s awesome! x
I love your post they are so informative, this is something I’ve been thinking about but I do feel like I have a ways to go before, I’m working hard to try and get my post out there and hopefully this is something I can look at in the future. I’ve been thinking about moving to self-hosted next year just weighing up the options. Have you thought about moving to self-hosted over wp.com?
Thanks a lot! Yes I have! x
I have been thinking about using ads so this is helpful xx
So glad you found it helpful! xx
That is one in depth article. Thank you very much for putting it up in such a simple format! It’s perfect for new bloggers like me. Keep up girl!!
Aw thank you so much gorgeous! You’re too kind x
Nice comparison 🙂
Thank you 💕
This is very interesting. I don’t use ads to monetise but tend to stick with affiliate links and sponsored content but might be something I’ll look into!

Thank you, I am using Adsense to monetize my blog. But I am not satisfied with Adsense.
Thank you for this article, I get confused with these two and never know which to pick, this has made a lot of sense ❤️
My pleasure 😘
so helpful
Thank you!
I found this very helpful. Thank you for this post. I didn’t realize I could still monetize my blog without going self-hosted. Where is this option in the settings and how does one apply? Thanks you.
My pleasure! You’ve to upgrade to either a premium or a business plan and once you’ve upgraded, it’ll be shown in the plan settings. It’s pretty straightforward and easy x
Okay then. Thanks
Thanks for visiting my blog and the like. Best wishes on your blog.
Thank you!
I’ve chosen to use Amazon Affiliates and got accepted immediately even though my blog is less than two weeks old. It’s doing well, though. Personally, I refuse to pay to have companies place their ads on my site – even by upgrading my wordpress account. I tried to use adsense on a previous blog, but never figured out how to do it. I’m still a little befuddled by blogging, but I’ll get there. Thanks for the advice, though. It may come in handy when I know what I’m doing.
My pleasure Brenda! x
Your Posts always teach me something but Oh my goodness …is that how little ads make? £4-4.50 for 6000 views lol …
Aw thank you girly! Haha I know girl! Back then I used to think you could make at least make £2 for 2000/3000 views but oh boy I was so wrong! x
That’s like peanut change 🤣…I thought otherwise too, oh dear oh dear
Very well explained and detailed thank you
You’re welcome! Thank you x
Thanks for sharing this knowledge.
My pleasure!
Your blog has very unique information for unique topic which you have written. thanks for sharing with us good information.
How to earn my blog.
Thank you for this beautiful post. I have a few questions though. Does the amount you’ve earned only show at the end of the month? If yes what does 287 Ad impressions translate to? Because it’s been two days and I have that many Ad impressions but no earnings.
The amount you’ve earned will only show the next month, for example you’ll see how much you’ve earned for the month of June, at the beginning of July. I cannot give you an accurate result but I would say you’ve earned a couple of cents.
When you look at your stats page, you can see your ads earnings in the ‘ads’ section on the top left.
By Ad impressions I mean Ads served.
I recently monetized my site because I have lots of views (3k on bad days, 15k on good ones), I was at least expecting a dollar a day, but the other day (18k views and 100k+ impressions) I only made 0.50 cents. Is the ad program that comes default with wordpress now not the same as wordads? Am I doing something wrong? Why am I making so little?
It’s the same but the price have completely changed. You can’t really rely on the stats and impressions anymore, it’s just confusing 🤷🏻♀️ And I don’t understand why you’re making so little, you should at least make 5/6 dollars (for 15k views). If you get 100k+ impressions then your views should be more than 18k.
your site is on wordpress.com
self hosted website cannot earn from wordads
A self-hosted website can earn from wordads, you only need to apply to their program using Jetpack
Thanks for your information
You’re welcome!
Amazing!!!! An answer already 😉🙏 thanks🥰🥰
Thank you so much! ❤️
Reblogged this on Debbies Blog and commented:
I found this very helpful👏👏👏👏 thanks to new Lune😉😇😇💝
Thank you ❤️
Is it possible to use WordAds and Adsense altogether?
I don’t think so. You can only use one ad program for one website and plus, you can only use AdSense if you have a self-hosted website.
