One of the easiest ways to earn money from your blog is by placing ads on your website. Those little pop up ads you see when you visit a website is an ad generated by the ad program. There are so many programs available and each have the same or different requirements depending on your website and program in question. It’s important to note that you need to buy your domain name if you would like to add ads on your website. You can’t add or monetise your blog if you don’t buy your domain.
Placing ads on a website isn’t complicated at all since the program will do everything for you, you just need to make sure that your website fits their requirements and you can choose where to place those ads. It’s as simple as that! In today’s post, I wanted to share with you ways to add ads on both self-hosted websites as well as websites under a hosting service platform which in this case is WordPress.com. Without further ado, let’s jump to the post!

ON A HOSTING SERVICE PLATFORM
(EG. WORDPRESS.COM)
With WordPress.com, you are only able to add ads on your website by upgrading to a premium, business or eCommerce plan. Even in that case, you will only be able to use one ad program which is WordAds. You can’t use any other ad program unless you go self-hosted. It’s fairly easy to place ads on your website through WordAds. If you go to your settings, you can choose where you would like your ads to appear such as at the end of your blog posts, in your sidebar, footer, etc.
You don’t have to worry about the types of ads appearing or their advertisers, in the sense they might show inappropriate ads on your website which can be some people’s concern (lol). Most of the times, it generates ads for WordPress.com but depending on what you have searched in your browser – you may find some of those companies/products as ads. So it’s not something to worry about!
Unlike other ads programs, WordAds doesn’t have any requirements which means if you use any of the paid plans I’ve mentioned above – you will instantly be able to monetise your website through ads. Note that the average CPM (Cost Per Thousand) is extremely low compared to other ad programs. If you gain a decent amount of traffic on your blog consistently every month and would like to earn money from ads, I would recommend to go self-hosted.

ON A SELF-HOSTED WEBSITE
(WORDPRESS & BLOGGER)
With a self-hosted website, you have a lot more options when it comes to ad programs. However, you will need to apply in order to get accepted. This is pretty obvious but you can only use one ad program on your website meaning that you can’t use two different ad programs on a website. You are obviously free to switch to another ad program. Most of those programs’ requirements are based on your traffic.
They will expect your website to reach a minimum amount of traffic per month and if you don’t reach that number, unfortunately your request won’t be accepted. But don’t worry! You can always try it again once you reach that number. Some programs are quite specific about that number for instance they will expect you to reach a specific number of monthly page views and unique visitors. But it will be clearly stated on their website.
As I mentioned for WordAds, once you are accepted, setting up ads on your website is very easy. It will automatically generate ads on your website and you can choose where you want to place them. Some programs can be quite *excessive* with their ads, in the sense they will appear everywhere and anywhere. The website will be flooded with ads and you won’t be able to change it in the settings either. With most of these programs, you will be able to choose what types of ads you don’t want to appear.
>> The ad programs I would recommend are Google AdSense and Mediavine.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR READING!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this subject- I have WordAds on my site, and I don’t have enough viewers to make a lot from it but it’s nice to know I have that passive income working in the background all the time x
My pleasure love! If it makes you feel better, you can’t actually make a lot even if you have a lot of viewers. I don’t know if they do it on purpose but once you start to gain a lot of traffic, they decrease their CPM drastically and their CPM are already very low to begin with (compared to other ad programs). So you can’t really earn a lot and it might take years to reach the minimum outstanding amount that’s why I would recommend people to go self-hosted if they get a significant amount of traffic and would like to earn a decent amount of money through ads. Thank you so much for reading x
Wow thank you that’s actually really helpful 🙂 tbh it’s not a big deal for me, but I’m glad others have the same experience x
It’s not a big deal to me either but I know many bloggers who earn around £200-£300 on an average every month through ads. Some even earn thousands of pounds through ads only x
Wow that would be amazing!
I know right!
Thank you very much for sharing knowledge I will definitely follow your ideas

“One of the easiest ways to earn money from your blog is by placing ads on your website” — I vehemently disagree! (but I still ❤ your blog 😉 )
IMHO it would be much easier to turn a blog into a community. Members could post, posts not only comment. For that, they would pay a membership fee. Advertising imposes ad tracking on people who don't know how to prevent such invasions on their privacy. There are many problems with ads — I could go on for a long time (but you probably already know that from my own writing 😉 ).
Haha I personally find memberships to be a great way to monetise a blog but ads are much easier in my opinion. A membership requires a lot of good quality content as well as a great community. People are paying a fee every month whereas with ads, your readers or anyone don’t have to pay anything. With ads, you don’t have to do anything.
Unless you are putting informative content, people aren’t going to pay the fee for the membership every month. There are obviously both pros and cons for both options but in my opinion, I would say ads are an easy and hassle free way to make money through blogs. Thank you so much for reading 😊
Well, it may sound a little loony to you, but when I explained the theory to some important people @ ebay (aka TEH founder 😉 ) … about 15 years ago … they got it … and bought shopping.com !! 😀 Another good example os Barry Diller’s IAC, or the way Google & Amazon have lately been investing very heavily in TLDs (they’re actually making a mistake, but they’ve never really listened to me anyways 😛 )
Great post!
Will definitely monetize my blog soon
New Lune….I will love to add your posts to my blog in wordpress feeds
I humbly ask for your permission
Thank you so much Aaron! Of course, you can 😊
Right thanks
Can you do the same for me please?
I’ve thought about it but get irritated by ads popping up on other peoples, so don’t think I will, but nice to know I can
Haha I’m not going to lie when a website is flooded ads, it decreases the speed of my laptop and I instantly close the website. But it allows them to earn money so it’s good for them. Thank you so much for reading lovely ❤️
Great content… veey informative… 💋💋💋
Thank you so much! ❤️
here I am crying while trying to understand how to set up my blog, though I’m glad I saw your post… I’m trying to build a reputation on the internet then maybe I can be self hosted
I’ve written a post about it, here’s the link if you are interested: https://new-lune.com/2018/05/01/how-to-create-a-blog-101-guide/
I know it can be hard to set up a website at the beginning, I’ve been there so I completely understand. Would you like to see a tutorial/post about it? I can do one if you want me to 😊
Omg
I really needed that … It’s a learning curve with WordPress. I came from blogspot where everything was available… Your articles on blogging have been so helpful lol thanks
I’m so glad to hear that! ❤️
How to switch to self hosted website?
I’ve written a post about it, here’s the link: https://new-lune.com/2018/05/01/how-to-create-a-blog-101-guide/
Thanks a bunch!
You’re very welcome!
I read the post just now. I wanted to ask that since I have already paid up for a premium plan on wordpress for a year, if I plan to go self hosted next year, so I don’t have to pay to wordpress then ryt?
WordPress(.org) and WordPress.com are completely two different platforms so if you plan to go self-hosted next year, you will have to pay for WordPress.
Simple and easy to understand great post
Thank you so much! ❤️
Your Welcome
Thanks for sharing!
My pleasure love! ❤️
Although I am 1 year already in this platform, still lots of things I have to learn. I read a lot about monetizing blogs but I did not tried it yet. Lot of worries clouded my mind. May I ask for a help? ☺️
Sure! 😊
Oh thank you!!! 😍😍😍
Just a reminder: “Advertising through third-party ad networks like Google AdSense, OpenX, Lijit, BuySellAds, and Vibrant Media, or selling advertising space on your site, is only permitted on sites that have the WordPress.com Business and eCommerce Plans. Sites on the WordPress.com Premium plan can use WordAds, Affiliate Linking, or Sponsored posts to generate advertising revenue” according to https://wordpress.com/support/monetize-your-site/
I didn’t know that the business and eCommerce plan allowed third party ad programs, it wasn’t the case the last time I checked so it’s amazing!
Yes, they do now and it works in my favor 🤗🙂
It was more than helpful. Specially for new bloggers like me. Can you please tell that, is only 1 advt. program is allowed on a website? Even if you are self hosting?
So glad it was helpful! Yes, only one ad program is allowed on one website. It doesn’t matter if you use a paid plan or have a self-hosted website.
