my blogging mistakes and regrets - new lune

My Blogging Regrets & Mistakes

I think we all have made mistakes and have regrets when it comes to blogging, whether it was done on purpose or unintentionally, that’s why I wanted to share with you the mistakes I’ve made so you can’t do the same mistakes as I did – as well as the things I’ve learnt from these mistakes.

But more importantly I wanted to say that it’s okay to have those regrets. We all learn something valuable and it makes us appreciate the things we have achieved right now. So grab a cup of coffee or tea because it’s going to be a long post and if you’re interested then keep on reading!

NOT POSTING CONSISTENTLY

My biggest regret will always be the fact that I didn’t post regularly on my blog. I created this blog 4 years ago but I’ve only been blogging consistently for 2 years. The first two years of my blog were pretty much non-existent. I only had around 500/600 followers which is a lot considering I didn’t post that often, I didn’t have a lot of traffic either which is obviously normal because I wasn’t publishing any blog posts.

Now that I see a difference after blogging continuously for 2 years, it just makes me feel disappointed. If I had been this consistent since the beginning then I’d have double the followers and traffic right now.

There is no point in thinking about the past because it’s not going to change anything and I had my reasons for not taking my blog seriously at that time. I had other things to prioritise which were much more important than blogging and I ended up achieving those things.

For someone who rarely posted, I ended up proving myself that I was capable of posting regularly even in hectic situations so if you have your mind set on something, you can definitely achieve them. Don’t let any other things distract you, organisation is the key!

In addition, it doesn’t matter if you couldn’t blog regularly before, what matters is the fact you can change the future. Work hard on your blog even if that means you have to work on it every single day and don’t have a social life. If I can do it then so can you! You can get the same numbers and traffic, if not even more!

NOT GAINING FOLLOWERS ON SOCIAL MEDIA

I have always been active on social media, more precisely on Instagram and Twitter. I’d always interact and engage with other bloggers but after a while with the algorithm constantly changing on Instagram (and there was always some sort of negativity on Twitter), I started to use them less and less which was obviously a mistake.

As a result, I’m stuck in the same place I was years ago and it’s very difficult to gain followers. If I have to be completely raw and honest, I thought in 4 years I’d have at least 4000 followers on each platform but I’m not even near those numbers lol!

Even though I should have been more active on these platforms, I’m not entirely discouraged by it. If there is something I’ve learnt is you never know what might happen in a couple of weeks or months. I’ve seen accounts gaining thousands of followers within a couple of weeks so just because you aren’t seeing a difference now – it doesn’t mean you will never see one!

Another thing is I feel much happier being active on Instagram now than I was years ago and it’s due to the fact that I only post whenever and whatever I like. I’ve been spending more time interacting and engaging with other bloggers/accounts as well. I’m yet to find my love for Twitter but I’m working on it haha!

NOT TAKING GOOD PICTURES

For the longest time I wasn’t happy with my blog photography and in some ways I still am. I felt the quality wasn’t good and the composition of my flatlays weren’t the best. I never had the opportunity to work, practice or even improve my blog photography because I never took them freely like how others do.

As you know, people in my real life don’t know I have a blog so taking blog pictures is extremely difficult (it’s a hassle lol!) but I still manage to do it with the little time I have. All the flatlays/pictures you see on my Instagram and blog are taken within 2 or 3 minutes in a hurry.

It’s only recently that I’ve been able to practice my photography skills. I’m always in awe by other bloggers photography and you could say it kind of inspired me to try my best. If you are not happy with your blog photography, try to work on it whenever you can and don’t get discouraged. Every blogger has their own style and creativity so don’t let your negative thoughts ruin the talent you have.

NOT SHARING MY MILESTONES

I don’t know if you have noticed but I rarely share any milestones or goals that I’ve achieved whether it’s on my blog or Instagram. Not because I’m not grateful because I really am! It truly means a lot to me, you literally have no idea!

The reason why I don’t celebrate or share my milestones is because I don’t want others to feel bad. The majority of my followers are bloggers themselves so I don’t want any of them to feel discouraged or disappointed. I know how much time and hard work it requires to run a blog and when you don’t see a difference on your blog while others are reaching many milestones, it can be the worst feeling ever and I don’t want anyone to feel that way.

By sharing my milestones once in a blue moon is a good balance for me, I still get to thank you and I can make sure that I don’t hurt anyone’s feelings. When it comes to numbers, it’s not really a regret for me because it’s there for everyone to see so I don’t need to share it – if you know what I mean.

On the other hand, there are certain things I wish I could share and be proud of, for instance when I get to work with brands that I’ve always adored. Maybe it’s all in my head but I’d rather share my tips and tricks to reach a milestone which will be helpful to so many of you than share a milestone or goal that I’ve achieved.

NOT BEING VOCAL

I’ve been starting to be more open on my blog which is really amazing, it’s so weird to think that people in my real life don’t know about my anxiety but I’ve shared it online. I want to be more transparent and open up on my blog & talk about so many things but I don’t want it to turn into a mistake.

Some people can be very vile online and when you share something vulnerable, they can turn that against you. I’ve seen it in so many instances that’s why I’m so reluctant to share personal things.

Sometimes people can misinterpret your comments. You might say something completely normal and people might hear it in a different tone and take it the wrong way. There are times even native English speakers get into trouble because of it, so you can imagine how hard it is for me because English is my third language. I always try to be extra careful, it’s like walking on eggshells.

NOT TALKING ABOUT THINGS THAT MATTER TO ME

When I first started my blog, I’d always share or talk about a charitable organisation every Friday – that was literally my thing! As my blog started to grow, I realised that people weren’t really interested in that topic which was very sad to me because it was something very close to my heart.

I get why my audience isn’t interested and it might not be everyone’s cup of tea but I always wanted to use my blog to raise awareness on so many causes. Now I have a page on my blog where I share some charities, that’s a compromise I’ve made so if people are interested then they can check it out! Also if you know a good non-profit organisation then please share it with me!

  1. I loved this post, it’s such an interesting read! I had no idea you used to share charities every Friday, it’s such a shame that those posts didn’t do very well, considering it’s for a good cause xx

  2. Love this! All are definitely relatable! It’s amazing how people may stop by our blogs for just a few minutes but we are spending hours upon hours working on all the details of our blogs! 💛 Thanks for sharing!

  3. This is very much a motivational post for me. I always say to myself, you have to have a passion for blogging because of all the hard work that goes into it. It’s awesome that you have decided to be more transparent. Id love to see your milestones and goals. It gives me motivation as a new blogger to, one day, get to those places as well. I love it! Thank you!

  4. That was a very nice read!! thanks for sharing, I will make sure to take all of these into consideration!! Also, I love movies so much but I don’t think anyone is interested in reading my reviews so I got so discouraged to share them but I found a solution, and decided to post every month a set of mini reviews in one post. Like this, it doesn’t affect my traffic but the people who enjoys movie reviews get to read every month my reviews!!

  5. Omg, you hit every point. This is exactly how I feel. I started my blog about a year ago and just had no idea what I was doing… I just knew that I wanted to write. I was on and off all last year, but I wanted to change that this time around. I am more active, posting consistently, getting my social media all to tie in and interact with other bloggers and found out that’s really the way to go.

Thank you for sharing. It makes me feel like I am moving in the right direction 🙂

  6. I adore this post!! Every point made was literally me when I started! I share your exact sentiments and I promised to be more intentional with my blog and my instagram page this year. Hopefully I get to celebrate 400 followers or more like you sooner than later.

    Thanks for sharing.

  8. I feel ya when it comes to consistency. I know I need to treat it like a true blue day job. I also feel like your blog is outstanding love the posts, pics, and bilingual aspects. Keep it up!!!

  9. I agree with all of these. Consistency is so important, even if that means only consistently posting once a week. I know this for clients but don’t implement it myself so I have started developing a strategy to combat this issue.

I can’t do Twitter. I have tried and I just can’t. LOL There is so much information I get lost and overwhelmed. But it’s great when I want to learn something new quickly.

  10. I love all of your posts! I’m with you on the picture taking. I know I need a new phone with a better camera, but I don’t have the money yet. But I definitely share more online than in real life! No one I know in real life follows my blog and very few my Instagram… I think the internet knows more about me than anyone else lol

  11. I can relate to a lot of your regrets/mistakes, I’m probably stuck in some of them right now, but I’m ok with my pace thus far, and the important thing is to keep working at it. I especially like how your ‘regrets/mistakes’ always have something positive mentioned at the end, it’s a nice and encouraging touch.

  12. Such an honest post – loved it! Not blogging consistently was also my biggest mistake, even though I´ve had two babies since I started. But the truth is even when I had time to work on my blog I choose not to, cause I wanted to watch TV shows, talk to friends over the phone etc or simply didn´t feel inspired! But blogging requires discipline like everything else! As to the social media, I still can´t find my inspiration with Instagram since they changed the algorithm. I keep losing followers cause I just don´t post lol

    Have a great week!

  13. Hi, Thanks for stopping by my site today! I have just seen yours and I appreciate all your comments about blogging! I’ve made the same mistakes-not posting everyday, inconsistencies in subject, being unresponsive, etc. Somehow my two sites have taken on lives of their own and I have a good many followers. Be true to yourself and your your passion-it only works when your heart is in it! Your site is beautiful!!!

  14. Such an encouraging post. It’s like a mirror to check our mistakes.
… and 500-600 followers is not a bad start at all!! This is to all us bloggers – let’s keep at it !!

  15. Great article. I like how you weaved awareness for charitable organizations into your blog post – even if it wasn’t intentional. As you mentioned, organization is key, and while you might not have a regular post about charities, you can find creative ways to give a link back to your Make a Difference page. Also, I don’t see a link to that on your header or footer, maybe putting a featured section somewhere in your widgets so people always know your main motivation. Thank you for a wonderful read. A bientôt!

    1. Thank you Rika! That’s a great idea! I’ve only mentioned it on my About page. I might add it on my sidebar! Thanks for reading lovely x

    1. Thank you so much hun! It means a lot to me! I don’t know when, to be completely honest, I’ll definitely tell them one day but I don’t think it’s anytime soon. You are so kind, my lovely! x

  16. I felt the sincerity and honesty in this post. I’ve always enjoyed having a community of people following each other’s blogs or sites here in WordPress. And actually, what made me go back to blogging once again (yes, after five failed attempts and five erased websites. Lol) were the things you mentioned in this post. Perhaps, the online space is the new “earth to walk on” where we can meet as much real people as we do offline. I’m lucky to have stumbled upon a few of them — you included. 😉

  17. As I read your reasons for not sharing your milestones, I couldn’t help but wonder if it may be quite the opposite. Blogging is a time consuming task and once you’ve accomplished something that you’re proud of, you should definitely share. This can help motivate others to push harder and encourage them not to throw in the towel.

  18. This is so relatable. I had done the same where I wasn’t posting consistently and I always think had I started then I would have gotten farther than where I am today. But everyone’s journey is different and everything is a learning process. Thanks so much for sharing!

  19. Thank u for sharing I am one of those u like my post. Sometimes some of them you even give them inspiration to write about your mistakes. But it is ok because that is when u will know and reveal who u realy are. And u will thank God for growing spiritually.

  20. Thank you for your insights and for sharing blogging mistakes that we all make. I have been blogging for four years with few followers. Perhaps it is because my blog is primarily inspirational and the public is not looking for that.Anyway, I will keep writing.

  21. Wow thanks for the tips ..my blogging mistake was not owning my domain and not networking ..but now I own my domain and I’m trying to network and also post consistently…

  22. Reblogged this on Author Steve Boseley – Half a Loaf of Fiction and commented:
Here’s a list of regrets over on New-Lune about blogging, but what it actually is, is a list of things to strive for to make our blog just a little better and as someone trying to do just that, I found this post at just the right time. If you’re new to blogging or even looking to inject some new life into your blog, you could do a lot worse than reading this advice…

  23. I hobby blogged for ages before recently starting to take mine more seriously. I wish I had been more consistent at the beginning but it has been a journey and I have learned so much. I can relate to this post a lot. I have just recently decided to be open about my blog with people in my real life.

  24. Consistency is a lot more difficult than it sounds, I try to be sometimes but my workload or other stuff may be overwhelming.
The trick I try to use is to write something everyday, it doesn’t work all the time but it’s something whether 10, 50 or 100 words.

  25. Love this post! I stopped blogging over the past several months for a few reasons… one of the being that I started finding blogging a little draining as I realised that as time went on I began to blog more about what I thought others wanted to see rather than what I wanted to write about. So thank you very much for sharing this. Xx
