how not to promote your blog - new lune

How Not To Promote Your Blog.

I was initially going to write effective methods to promote your blog but then I realised that instead of saying what you should do, I should be first saying what you shouldn’t do in terms of promoting your content. I’m pretty sure these are the things you already know but I wanted to make sure to mention in case if you didn’t already know them before. Some of these things are pretty obvious so I don’t think I even need to mention them. As always, if you are interested – keep on reading!

USING ANOTHER BLOG’S COMMENT SECTION TO PROMOTE YOUR BLOG

There is obviously nothing wrong leaving a link to your blog in the comments when you are commenting on a blog post. I personally don’t have a problem with that but other bloggers might have a different opinion and I completely respect that. However, there are people who use the comment section of another blog as a social media platform to promote their blogs/posts which looks extremely bad.

One, your comment will probably get deleted so there is literally no point writing it. Two, it gives a bad impression of your blog and you as a blogger before even someone checks your website. Three, it’s just disrespectful. If you have a blog, I’m pretty sure you have at least received one comment with only a link. There are some people who even go as far as promoting it like on social media.

For instance, there won’t be a single sentence or even a mention about the post in the comment and are only talking about their website. I always recommend bloggers to interact with one another to increase their website’s visibility and show support to other people in the community but when you use the comment section of another blog as a tool, other people can easily notice it and see that your sole purpose is to drive traffic towards your website and that’s definitely not a good look.

ONLY USING YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA TO PROMOTE YOUR CONTENT

I’ll be the first person to say that I’m definitely guilty of this especially on Twitter! So, I’m not going to act like I don’t make this mistake. I’m planning on changing that very soon, hopefully sooner than later! The reason why I’m mentioning this point is I don’t want you to be making the same mistake as I. Social media platforms are amazing when it comes to promoting your blog content but try to mix other content along with your blog promotion.

Your followers shouldn’t feel like you are only promoting your content. Obviously, it completely depends on the social media platform in question as well. If we are talking about Pinterest then you don’t have any other options than to promote your content but when it comes to Twitter or Facebook, you can share other things such as your other hobbies, thoughts, opinions, etc. At the end of the day, your followers want to get to know you better and see a bit more of your personality.

MESSAGING PEOPLE TO CHECK OUT YOUR BLOG/POSTS

Last but not least, sending messages on social media or emails to check out your website or blog posts isn’t something I would recommend doing. There are obviously a few exceptions, if you have been inspired by the blogger in question and are letting them know that you’ve created a blog because of them then it’s completely okay to message – I’m pretty sure it will make their day.

The same goes for blog posts, if you have written an article inspired by them and want them to check it out – they will really appreciate it. Unless you’ve mentioned the blogger in the blog post or linked their website/blog posts in the article, you can’t justify sending a message to another blogger asking them to check your website. It’s very similar to the first point but some people really try to promote their blog posts/websites through DMs and that only lead them getting blocked.

Sending messages or even emails are a great way to connect with other bloggers but you shouldn’t take advantage of that opportunity. At the end of the day, we are all in the same boat. I mean, who doesn’t want to grow their blog? Building connections and friendships along the way will make you feel less alone in this journey. By sending those promotional messages/emails, you are potentially ruining the image of your blog and yourself.

  1. Makes a person really seriously wonder how there’s people getting these wrong out there. It just feels like no brainers. But I get the link-commenters every. Single. Day. And indeed: it feels disrespectful to me 😵

  2. I enjoy reading this, thank you for sharing. As a new blogger I am still learning and a lot of your writings has truly helped me❣️. I started my blog to escape from my suffering and to meet new people. I have been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called Fibromyalgia. I live in constant pain no matter what medications I take, it just helps me function. Because of it I gained a lot of weight when for many years I was at a consistent weight of 124lbs. Healthy and very active no one ever thought I was in my late 40s. Even though now I am told I still look younger than I look with the extra weight. Lol. I always kept a journal and still do but I wanted to try something different. Lune you inspire me as well as other bloggers here in the community. Thank you once again for writing such wonderful blogs 🥰

  3. This is a great post! I definitely block those that are purely promoting themselves in my DMs. This happens to me predominantly on IG. On a positive note, it does help me keep my following list clean. 🙂

    1. There is literally no point to it! Nobody is going to check your blog if you send a message asking them to. Someone is most likely going to check your blog if you don’t say anything about it as opposed to full on promoting it. Thank you so much for reading ❤️

  4. Thanks for sharing all is good advice – social media takes a lot of work.

Not only is commenting with only a link to your blog exceedingly bad manners, I would never click on a link without any explanation behind it as it’s a sure fire way to expose yourself to someone phishing with a malicious link putting you at risk of being scammed!

    1. My pleasure! That’s very true! Most of the times, those links are from bots or scammers but when a blogger does it, it just looks extremely bad. You could have at least written two words about the post like “Great post” or something but it’s very obvious that they are just trying to drive traffic towards their website.

Thank you so much for reading 😊

  5. I would also have to say one of the greatest way in not promoting one’s blog would have to be when someone starts liking all your posts but you wonder if they even read it. For me, it’s quite unattractive because I’m not moved by the likes but much rather it’s a joy when one engages in contributing their thoughts about a post. It helps the writer to develop a relationship with the reader. It is understandable that certain readers may not always have the time or feel the need to comment but liking someone’s posts in less than a minute and receiving twenty notifications all at once, is quite annoying and pointless. Thank you for sharing your tips 😊

    1. My pleasure love! ❤️ The part about notifications can definitely be annoying but I don’t really have a problem if someone starts to like a bunch of my posts. I know it’s probably a new reader and I see it the same way as on Instagram when somebody starts to like a couple of your pictures. Obviously, if they were liking 20/30 blog posts in a row then that would seem quite a bit but other than that, I always try to think that they are excited that they found a new website to read haha! Thank you so much for reading 😊

    2. Aww I like your perspective too. Maybe they are excited that they have discovered a good thing in a long time. Lol but it can be annoying for those who over do it. They like but they never follow the blog or page. People are funny but one just have to carry on. I enjoyed your post. Keep up the good work 🤗

  6. Lol ! I guess i am guilty on many accounts for innumerable offences. I beg for mercy and pardon.

Jokes Apart ! Yes you are right. Other bloggers are also humans. If you interact with them just to have a view, the no we are not some click-robots. One must interact with other bloggers to build a community, develop understanding and also to help each other. Fully appreciate your points.

  7. I agree with the top one, it’s a little selfish to only leave your blog link on someone else’s post🤷🏻‍♀️ and when I see them I tend to just scroll past for that reason, so the self promo might not even be that effective. Great tips, I am guilty of pushing my posts on twitter x

    1. Yes I agree, I don’t mind links that are proceeded by a meaningful comment or links relevant to the topic.

I appreciate your site btw, it’s really inspirational and helpful.

  8. Good points!
There is a term for aggressively overpromoting you book called “Bookwhacking”. This also applies to blogging. I suppose we could call it “Blogwhacking”. We blog/write to share our ideas with others, and while it is nice to watch your readership grow, you can easily lose them by bombarding them.
I think that it is OK to put links into a comment if it is relevant and will add value to the readers. It shouldn’t take the form of jumping up and down, waving your virtual hands, and yelling “Read me too!”
I like the bilingual aspect of your blog. (Je parle une petite peu francais) That’s all I got…

    1. Thank you so much! I didn’t know about this term but it makes perfect sense. I completely agree with you, there is nothing wrong putting a link into a comment but if you are only promoting about your blog in the comment and haven’t written anything about the post then it’s not only disrespectful but it also gives a bad look to your blog. Thank you so much for reading 😊
