Are Blog Pictures Important?

As a blogger, the quality of your content is something you should pay attention to if you would like to grow your blog. Your content doesn’t only include your blog posts but it also includes your pictures. Not everyone has a camera, let alone an expensive DSLR camera! I would never say to invest in a professional camera in order to have a successful blog, you might need a camera in order to have a successful Instagram account but for your blog – that’s not really the case.

In today’s post, I wanted to share my thoughts on whether you need beautiful and good quality pictures in order to grow your blog. The short answer to that question is it completely depends on your personal preference. Some bloggers would say you would absolutely need to focus on the quality of your pictures whereas others would say, it doesn’t really matter. Without further ado, let’s jump into the post!

IT COMPLETELY DEPENDS ON YOUR NICHE

As I said previously, I personally think it completely depends on your niche. For instance, if your content is more focused on the visual aspect such as pictures then you definitely need to work on your photography skills. Note that you don’t need an expensive camera, your phone camera can do the same job.

If your content is focused on your writing and you don’t really need to use any pictures then you of course, don’t need to focus on pictures. Another thing that’s worth mentioning is the theme of your blog. The theme you use plays a huge part when it comes to the visual aspect of your blog. If your theme is completely focused on images then you definitely have to focus on the quality of the pictures you use.

YOU CAN USE FREE STOCK IMAGES

Don’t forget that you can still use free stock images if you think that you need to use good quality pictures for your blog/blog posts. Once again, it completely depends on your niche and the topics you write about. If you are writing a review about a specific product then you will obviously need to show and take pictures of the product in question. However, if your blog post isn’t about a specific product then you can get away by using free stock pictures.

Would I recommend to only use stock images for your blog? Not really. As time pass, you need to establish your own identity as a blogger and that includes your branding. One of your branding elements is photography which are your pictures. Taking your own pictures will not only help you stand out from the crowd but it will also help other people recognise your branding & blog.

EDITING APPS ARE YOUR BEST FRIENDS

As I mentioned previously, your phone camera is as good as a professional camera. Remember that it’s not the camera that takes the pictures but you. Editing apps are your best friends in this instance! You don’t have to purchase paid apps in order to edit your pictures, there are so many great free photo editing apps.

Don’t forget that you can use multiple apps to edit your pictures, you don’t have to use only one app. Have a browse through the App Store, download the apps that you find interesting and play around with them. You can never find the app(s) that you like without checking every single one of them (obviously you don’t have to check every single one of them but make sure to browse through the App Store).

  1. Since I don’t do the photo series anymore; Filterstorm Neue was the one I used primarily and it’s free if I recall correctly. It has a bit of a learning curve but it’s the best one of the 5-6 I’d alternate around. Reviews are mixed (learning curve and iOS issues with updates) if you get good with it you can do a lot with it.

    1. It cost a little bit, but there’s no ads or subscription fee.. etc.

I thought Neue was free but the others were for a fee.. with them.. avoid those because they don’t do much other than cost money.
(Just a suggestion because you seem the type to like to play on your phone and design if you get bored which is why I had it.)

  2. I love that you mentioned the free stock photos and editing apps. We can get caught up trying to do everything ourselves that it can become overwhelming. By taking advantage of the resources around us we can mitigate some of that.

  3. The sheer number of photos I have from the years I write about usually cover my posts. A bit of privacy, removal of metadata and downsizing helps with size but you’re onto something here!

  4. I prefer personal photos over paying for pre-made ones, regardless of how picture perfect the freebies and paid photos are. In the end, I will always opt for a photo I took myself, even if it’s not as photogenic as the ones I could be using.

I reuse photos a lot, but they’re ones I used in previous blog posts that I took myself. I have no issue with reusing a photo. When I first started blogging I used free images. A LOT. I stopped because everyone started doing this, and soon after I kept seeing these “free” photos on other blog posts that I was guilty of using myself!

    1. Reusing pictures is actually a great idea! I don’t think people talk about that often and it’s definitely not something bad at all. I’ve seen a lot of bloggers do it and I’ve even done it myself!

I can definitely understand what you’re saying, most of the times some “free” pictures are used pretty much everywhere and anywhere so it doesn’t look as unique and original anymore. Thank you so much for reading gorgeous ❤️

  5. When i started my blog i had no idea about images or how to use them.. now i am starting to use some in each post but feel like i still have a lot to learn. This post definitely helped make things clearer for me, thank you!
