How to take good pictures with your iPhone

Life is like photography. You need the negatives to develop.

Hey Loves! Having good quality pictures is a must when it comes to blogging and social media. You don’t need to buy an expensive camera to take your blog pictures, your iPhone will do the same job. Here are some tips and tricks I do to take my blog pictures using my iPhone 6!

1/ Turn on your grid

Having a grid when taking your pictures is so essential especially for flat lay photography. It’s very easy, go to Settings and scroll down then click on Photos & Camera. You will see an option called Grid and you turn it on!

2/ Always focus

The quality of your images is very important that’s what defines your blog as a brand and having good focused pictures is really essential. A tip to take focused pictures is to tap on your iPhone screen before taking your picture, it will automatically adjust the focus. Obviously, I’ll recommend to tap on the subjects/areas where you want your image to be focused, although when tapping on the screen, it will focus everywhere without any exceptions.

3/ Find good lighting

Good lighting is so important when it comes to pictures, it makes a huge difference! Take your pictures near a source of natural lighting for instance near your windows. Natural lighting will make your pictures look a thousand times better.

I wouldn’t recommend to take any pictures in the evening or night time when the sun goes down as it’s pretty self explanatory, you won’t get any natural lighting and the artificial lighting from the lamps and ceiling lights emit a yellow toned lighting so it won’t look great in pictures unless you use white bulbs which emit a cooler toned white lighting.

4/ Use apps to edit

L-R: Afterlight, Instagram & VSCO Cam

There are so many apps you can use to edit your pictures in terms of brightness and contrast. You can edit other things as well such as the sharpness level, temperature, etc. Once you find the right app, you can figure out so many things by yourself! I would recommend VSCO Cam, Facetune, Afterlight and even the Instagram app. As you can see above, these are the user interface of Afterlight, Instagram and VSCO Cam.

5/ Use your earphones

I’m pretty sure you all know this, you can use your earphones to take pictures. It’s pretty easy, attach your earphones with your iPhone as always then press on the volume buttons of your earphones and that’s it! It’s a very good technique and pretty useful at the same time if you are in a complicated position and can’t tap on the camera button.

6/ Avoid zooming

Zooming with a professional camera and iPhone camera are different, they are completely contrasting to each other. When zooming with your iPhone camera, it will distort the picture and you will lose quality whereas with a DSLR, it’s completely the opposite.

7/ Don’t use the flash

Avoid using the flash option to take your pictures, it will make your pictures look washed out and there will be shadows in the background. Believe me, that’s the last thing you want to do.

8/ Check your camera settings

Most people don’t think about this but make sure to check your camera settings, there might be settings you want to change and vice versa so it’s always a good idea to check them out.

9/ Take your pictures first

I know so many people who take a picture while they have selected a filter, please never do that! You always have the opportunity to add a filter after you have taken the picture so don’t select a filter while taking a picture.

DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER TIPS?

  1. Great Tips. As a good photographer you just need to click great pictures no matter what device you are using. Even i started writing some tips and blogs for the new photographers to improve their skills at https://www.behance.net/nitinkhannaor and let me know if something is missing. Thank you

  2. Fantastic post! I’ve heard that good lighting is everything, but it’s so difficult to find sometimes haha. I love using VSCO Cam too. I’m nowhere near being a good photographer so it helps me make them look a lot better than they actually are. Yay for editing.

Loving this post, which is why I’d love to feature it on our platform, Creators.co. Would you be interested in becoming a Creator? I’d love to expand on that so feel free to shoot me an e-mail. Hope to hear from you, all the best!

  3. Thanks for the hints. I have an older DSLR camera and it just doesn’t do the job as well as my iphone. When I first started blogging I’d had advice that I should avoid using a phone in favour of the DSLR, but I now realise that was just photographic snobbery. I now feel validated!

    • Exactly! People feel the need to buy an expensive camera such as a DSLR to take pictures but there are so many people who only use a smartphone and take splendid pictures. It’s not about the camera you use, it’s about the techniques you use that define the quality of a picture. x

  4. Love tip 5, I haven’t used my headphones before to take a pic! I think another tip would be to take as many pics from different angles as possible, and then look at them later with fresh eyes to see which ones you like best! x

  8. Wonderful blog! Do you have any recommendations for aspiring writers?
I’m planning to start my own website soon but I’m a little lost on everything.
Would you recommend starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I’m totally overwhelmed ..
    Any tips? Cheers!

    • Thank you! I’d recommend to start with a free platform first whether it’s WordPress(.com) or Blogger because it allows you to build your audience, content and writing style whereas if you went with a paid option, you never know if it’s going to work out and you don’t want to spend money on something you aren’t sure off. And if you go with a free platform, you can obviously go self-hosted afterwards! But do your research and ask a couple of writers for their opinions, and do what feels right for you!

  9. Simply wish to say your article is as astounding.
