I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with social media, on one hand I think social media helps so much with starting and creating your own brand & business whether that’s promoting your products and business or showcasing the skills and talent you have.
On the other hand, I just view social media as this perfect representation of how life is supposed to be in terms of lifestyle, materialistic things, relationships, etc. I know that people are only showing their best moments or a series of highlights but it doesn’t help the fact that I do think sometimes I only see an illusion and not the reality.
Related: Trying Something New With My Social Media
One of the things people really like when it comes to Instagram or Twitter is people being open which I’m not going to lie, this is what I really like to see as well. Even for someone who doesn’t share my blog in real life, I don’t have a problem sharing my insecurities or what I’m going through online.
I’ve shared my anxiety and some of my not-so-good experiences on my blog but I don’t like the idea of sharing it on social media, if that makes any sense. I view my blog as my online diary and my followers as my online friends but with social media – it’s the complete opposite.
You don’t really know ‘who’ someone is and there are literally thousands, if not millions of users on those platforms. Something you share might get taken out of context or reach people who create unnecessary dramas.
As I’ve said before, this year I’m trying to be more open and transparent on my blog and I’m trying to do the same way on social media as well. Most of the times, me being open isn’t always about sharing positive or uplifting things, it’s mostly about negative things which I don’t want my readers/followers to feel like I’m moaning or being negative.
Real life is stressfulll and very complicated that’s one of the reasons why we escape to social media, literally to forget what’s on our mind for a few minutes. And seeing this picture-perfect life of so many people can make you question your life. I do want to share more of myself without crossing the line. I definitely want to share good and bad things because that’s what life really looks like, doesn’t it?
PICTURES OF MYSELF
I don’t post any of my pictures on my blog nor on my social media but that’s literally what people want to see. Many bloggers/influencers will admit that pictures of themselves do so well in terms of numbers compared to pictures that you put so much time and effort into it, for instance flatlays or creative pictures.
I’m not saying that the only way to get followers and likes is to show your face, there are so many successful accounts who don’t and they are doing extremely well in terms of numbers. However people who show their faces are most likely to get more attention than someone who doesn’t which is sadly the truth.
In my opinion, I’d rather follow and interact with someone who has a nice personality than a nice ‘face’ and I literally don’t say that in a disrespectful way. Once you see so many people’s true colours, you realise appearance is the literally the last thing people are going to remember you for. People will remember the way you made them feel not the way you looked liked which is definitely another story to talk about.
Back to the topic, I don’t think I’m going to share my face but never say never. However I really want to share more of my creative side and do ‘creative’ pictures. I really want to enhance my photography skills and create my own style of feed/theme.
THE PERFECT LIFE
As I’ve mentioned above, everyone shows their best moments or highlights of their life which I’m all for but sometimes you do forget that you’re only watching someone’s social media platform and not their real life.
You don’t really know what’s happening behind closed doors and social media is definitely not the actual representation of someone’s life. But at the same time, it’s not the place to share your problems or issues either.
However with that said, I really want to use social media as an online diary, the same way I use my blog. I want to share all my milestones, moments, experiences and lessons. I don’t want my feed to create an illusion that my life is perfect, I want to share my journey with you – probably because I don’t want to feel alone when I embark on a new chapter lol!
I know this post might be all over the place (lol!). Anyway, I’ve never really been a fan of social media other than for watching cute cat videos or for inspiration but as a blogger, I do think you have to take advantage of it. I’m going to try to do all the things I’ve mentioned in this post, being more open and transparent and sharing my creative side with my photography.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR READING!
I love this, I think this is so important to highlight!
Thank you love! ❤️
You are not alone N. Most times what people post on social media is just the side they want other people to see (It does not mean that they are not happy in real life though)
Yes, I totally agree with you!
Bonjour, I really enjoyed reading your post. I agree and understand what you mean when you make that difference between a blog and other social media platforms. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you lovely! 💗
Thank you for sharing your views – I don’t like the fact that nowadays so many people equal numbers/popularity with quality and actual skills. Obviously I would like my blog/Instagram account to reach as many people as possible, but it’s difficult when others are buying likes and using shady tactics I’m not even aware of. The whole algorithm is based on popularity. Instagram can be a great creative/promotion tool as well, but I see so many repetitive accounts succeeding.
My pleasure hun! Completely agree with you, it’s such a great platform but sometimes it can be so negative x
This! I’ve taken a break from social media and I’m living my best life I have time to read, look after myself and my mental health! I relax more and I’m not so pent up on the worlds anger or my self image anymore! X
I’m so glad to hear that! x
Amazing, some people without taking time to understand you can throw shade on social media. I’m actually careful with what I post. Sometimes you can’t blame us when we show only a particular side of ourselves. It’s because social media is just too wide including the good and bad people.
Thank you sweet! Couldn’t have said it better ❤️
Agreed. And it is all okay and needed to be transparent in life and in social media. We don’t need to be fake to fit in. And we should never make the mistake of comparing the “edited life” people put on social media with our “behind the scenes”.
Have a wonderful day my friend ❤️
So true! Thank you babe! You too, have a great day ❤️
You’re not alone. I have yet to show my face on my blog or linked social media, but I’m constantly being asked for photos of me. I refuse, as this is about my writing, not my looks.
As I’m writing under a pseudonym, I’m braver in talking about the negative aspects, and that has got a lot of people thanking me. They realise they aren’t alone in having chaotic days, and it makes them feel better.
It’s not all roses and candy x
The only reason I don’t show my face is for privacy reasons and I wholeheartedly agree with the fact that at the end of the day, it’s all about your writing and not your looks. And I completely agree with everything else you’ve said x
I feel this one, social media makes you feel like “you are not good enough” and “you can’t have enough” that’s a wierd position to put yourself in, it’s like a drug you become addicted to comparing your life with others, before you know it you are buying stuff you can’t afford, you’re seeking validation.. a few like makes you feel like something is wrong with you, not to mention the bad vibes from cyber bullies, these platforms can mess up if your not careful
Such an important post! Looking forward to seeing your photography 🙂
Thank you babe! ❤️
About personal photographs, I have always enjoyed following your blog without knowing what you look like. However, I have on many occasions been curious. I guess “seeing faces” will always be regarded as an added pleasure to the whole experience of being connected online. It is just human nature. Thanks for sharing.
Hahah the only reason why I don’t share my full face is for privacy reasons. I like to keep my personal/professional life private from my blog but you never know, I might decide to share my face in the future 🤷🏻♀️ Thanks for reading!
It is all about balance, and I find it by having fun.
At some point you have to be negative, and crude, and ugly, otherwise you become a plastic doll. If “people” dont like it, so be it, those numbers mean nothing, I rather grow in artistic skills.
Completely agree with you! x
I spent a week without social media, because my phone was on repair. I was more happier those days with more time in my hands.
I’m glad to hear that! 💗
I understand what you’re saying in this post. I’m not on Instagram as much as I used to be because I’m sorry, it’s seems to be ‘look at me living my best life in Santorini, Barcelona , or Bali.” Sorry, this old gal is living her best life right here waiting for a Greyhound bus to Pittsburgh or a flight to Los Angeles or Las Vegas . I show my face in my blogs because after the Good Lord has blessed me living up to 66years, yes I’m going to tell the world just what the Sports Diva looks like. As for you not showing your face on your blogs or social media , that’s okay. I love reading your posts and don’t care what you look like .
Aww thank you love! ❤️
I’ve had a little trouble with social media and will agree with you that it is a lot to handle. The most important thing however, is to be happy with yourself in whatever you do. If posting or not posting pictures is what makes you happy, then do it.
Totally agree with you! x
I can really relate to this post particularly about how I keep my blog private from social media. Part of it is fear social media friends aren’t interested in my writing. It also took me a long time to post pictures of myself on my blog and I don’t do it very often. I am trying to do things a little differently to see how it feels including sharing blog posts on social media. I am definitely for showing my true colors wherever and I even tend to share some of the times when life isn’t going so great.
I can definitely relate to everything you’ve said! Thanks for reading lovely ❤️
Totally agreed ! Not so much, a fan of social media. I think it’s a personal choice if anyone doesn’t like to post pictures, it’s just ok 🤗
Thank you love! 💗
WordPress and Pinterest are the only social media I really use now! WordPress is more positive on average than Facebook and Twitter and Pinterest is where I get a lot of my hobby ideas.
Yes! I love Pinterest! 🙌🏼
Reblogged this on Vijayagiri views.
Thank you ❤️
Social media ironically takes away a life from us. Imagine how many hours in a day we would save on average if we did not have social media in our lives? The anxiety? The stress? Yet we still take things for granted.
I also view my blog as an online diary too although I guess the difference is that I have shared my face. Despite so, I think it’s important to set limitations on what you want to present whilst also making sure you’re not posting fairy tale stories.
Love this!! it summarizes my thoughts exactly!!
Thank you sweet! 💗
Its very interesting post indeed. My idea about social media is to make a ,,show,, for a people..I don’t think social media are good for ur personal problems or life..I guess people wanna have a fun there and see the highlights of life instead of seeing a sad things..dont u think ?well.its definitely nothing against you its just my thoughts 🙂
Thank you so much for your words, this makes me feel a lot more normal!
My pleasure lovely! ❤️
I think it’s important to take social media detox here and there. x
Fantastic post! I totally agree with you, I like social media for inspiration but I struggle to use it as a platform for myself and my blog, everything seems so fake!
Thank you so much hun! 💗
Agreed. I’m hesitating to post a “before/after” close-up of my face for a skincare product I tried. My photos aren’t as “pretty” as what I typically see, so my post has been on the back burner.
I’m pretty sure your pictures are gorgeous! Just go for it! ❤️
Reblogged this and commented:
she shares her reason why she does what she does on social media. one of her big talks was her not wanting to show her whole face on social media. which is cool in a way
Thank you ❤️
I’ve recently decided to take an indefinite break from all of my social media accounts. While they are admittedly great for networking and exposure they were causing way too much drama and anxiety in my life. I used to be a twitch streamer and artist and would rely heavily on social media. Also, you hit the nail on the head with not knowing people on social media. I recently got out of a bad relationship with someone I met on social media and it was a real eye opener.
I’m so sorry to hear that! I totally agree with you, there are so many positive aspects from social media but the negatives are bad as well. I hope you are doing well now ❤️ Thanks for reading x
I took a long break from it to get rid of the bad habit of frequent checking. And one thing I realized, is that experiencing boredom can help us become more creative!
I usually procrastinate a lot when I’m bored lol 😂
Part of the process I believe… 😀
Yes, that’s true 😊
Enjoyed reading your post and do agree as well. When I stop to think, it is true that social media is enticing, interesting, fascinating, useful and many more positive aspects. But I also feel that it just pulls you in and holds you if you don’t have an inner control. It can just steal your time and energy. Yes, it can help you share your moments, but it can also steal moments from you. Today if you go for a dinner or any meal, you have many people who will just stare at their phones but not converse.. sometimes I feel that I spend too much time just going up and down the feed during which I could have read many useful books. I plan to read and then just take the phone to spend few minutes but ends up staying in for an expected duration of time. It is time to ensure that what we do, every second we spend is for the improvement or betterment of life. 🙂
Thank you so much! Completely agree with everything you’ve said 🙌🏼
I prefer Twitter over Instagram as its all about “thoughts” VS. “things” but I totally understand as a beauty blogger why Instagram is important. I’m on both but like Twitter because it’s HARDER to gain a following on there, so I like the challenge! xo Renee
It’s much harder to gain followers on Twitter! 😩 Thanks for reading lovely x
Thank YOU Gorgeous. Would love a follow back.
I agree, a blog seems a little more contained and tends to attract people who want to ‘read’ your posts – they’re generally more intentional about visiting a blog – while social media platforms can be a bit like Piccadilly Circus at the best of times 😊
So true! 🙌🏼💗
Hi! I’m new to this platform and the first blog I happened to check was yours☺️
I really truly entirely agree with you.I happen to share all of your views too.
Thank you so much! ❤️
I totally agree with you! Have a look at my new post https://onthethinkof.home.blog/2019/11/19/the-social-trap/
I despise it.
It’s a unique paradox; it’s become the only way to reach people and it’s almost entirely fake.
It’s good for some things, yet, nothing meaningful. Then another paradox; almost everyone uses social media almost exclusively and everyone feels worse the more they use it.
You can unplug and then you can’t reach anybody.
Beautifully you have expressed both positive and negative aspects is social media and also the reasons of you being straightforward.Inspirational indeed.Thank you
Thank you so much! ❤️
I dislike it sometimes when people get exploited or when unwanted information ruins some else’s reputation or lives. That’s when I’m upset. I’m really a private person and just social media makes everyone feel like they have to post their whole lives on the Social Media websites. It’s people’s only connection to others if they haven’t got a social life which is dumb.
That’s so true! Social media has so many pros but at the same time so many disadvantages as well.
Agreed and it is needed to be transparent in life
Agreed. it is important to be transparent in life.

Impressed by your blog🤩
People don’t usually think that they are living two lives; one that is real and the other is on social media.
I also wrote about it in my latest blog, so lemme know your thoughts on that.
