The majority of my followers are bloggers themselves and we all know how much time, effort, hard work and money it takes to run a blog. Ever since the beginning, I’ve seen a lot of negativity regarding bloggers hence the reason why a lot of bloggers don’t talk about or mention their blogs in real life.
It’s almost seen as an embarrassment or something to feel awkward about. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not ashamed of my blog and I’m pretty sure all the bloggers in this community aren’t either but when it comes to telling people in our real life, I’ll be lying if I said they wouldn’t judge me or talk behind my back if I mentioned my blog.
As you know, people in my real life don’t know that I have a blog except my mum and there have been a lot of negativity around bloggers in general so I wanted to explore the reasoning behind it. So grab a cup of coffee or tea and keep on reading, it’s going to be a very long post!

C’est presque perçu comme un embarras ou une gêne. Ne vous méprenez pas, je n’ai pas honte de mon blog et je suis à peu près sûr que tous les blogueurs de cette communauté ne le sont pas non plus, mais lorsqu’il s’agit de dire aux gens dans notre vie réelle, je mentirai si je disait qu’ils ne me jugeraient pas ou ne parleraient pas derrière mon dos si je mentionnais mon blog.
Comme vous le savez, les gens dans ma vie réelle ne savent pas que j’ai un blog sauf ma mère et il y a eu beaucoup de négativité autour des blogueurs en général, donc je voulais explorer le raisonnement qui le sous-tend. ANYONE CAN DO IT
I think the first reason why people don’t consider blogging as a ‘real’ job is the fact that anyone can create a blog. There aren’t any requirements or specifications, age, qualifications, interviews, you can pretty much create a blog within 2 minutes that’s how easy it is.
When you allow everyone to create a platform, it gives people the wrong idea that bloggers don’t have to work hard for it and bloggers aren’t necessarily educated or intelligent, in the sense that it’s such an easy job to do and you don’t need to have a qualification in order to do it.
Most people only see the negative side of it instead of the positive ones. It gives everyone the opportunity to create a platform and talk about the things they want/love, it doesn’t matter what language you speak, how old you are nor what you are doing in your life.
People forget that not every blogger in this community turns their blog into a business, let alone into a full-time job or career. Only a few manage to do it which is such an accomplishment. If anyone were able to earn from their blog, I’m pretty sure everyone in this world would have a blog by now.
Je pense que la première raison pour laquelle les gens ne considèrent pas les blogs comme un “vrai” travail est le fait que n’importe qui peut créer un blog. Il n’y a pas de spécifications, d’âge, de qualifications, d’entretiens, vous pouvez créer un blog en moins de 2 minutes, c’est aussi simple que cela.
Lorsque vous permettez à tout le monde de créer une plate-forme, cela donne aux gens une idée fausse que les blogueurs n’ont pas à travailler dur pour cela et que les blogueurs ne sont pas nécessairement éduqués ni intelligents en ce sens que c’est un travail si facile à faire et vous n’avez pas à avoir une qualification pour le faire.
La plupart des gens ne voient que l’aspect négatif au lieu des aspects positifs. Cela donne à chacun la possibilité de créer une plate-forme et de parler des choses qu’ils veulent/aiment, peu importe la langue que vous parlez, votre âge ou ce que vous faites dans votre vie.
Les gens oublient que tous les blogueurs de cette communauté ne transforment pas leur blog en une entreprise, encore moins en un emploi ou une carrière à plein temps. Seuls quelques-uns parviennent à le faire, ce qui est un tel accomplissement. Si quelqu’un pouvait gagner de son blog, je suis presque sûr que tout le monde en aurait un maintenant.

SHOWING THE NEGATIVE SIDE OF BLOGGING
I’ve never heard of successful bloggers or good things that bloggers do in the media. The only times I hear about bloggers (or youtubers for that matter) is when there are some sort of dramas or controversies which is so unfair in my opinion.
There are so many bloggers who have inspiring & successful stories and raise awareness on so many topics and causes but I rarely ever hear about them. Whereas if a blogger has done something stupid, so many media outlets are out there for that story.
There is a misconception that bloggers are only after free products and services. It can’t be helped when there are bloggers who are only after those things but it doesn’t mean all of us are. So many bloggers start their blog as a hobby or as a way to escape their problems and when their blog takes off, it’s completely normal to receive and accept those opportunities.
Just because some bloggers promote products/services they wouldn’t buy/use, it doesn’t mean that all the bloggers will do the same thing. So many bloggers have rejected opportunities that didn’t fit their niche or for moral reasons. It’s such a shame that the mistakes a few bloggers make represent the entire blogging community as a whole.
In addition, there is nothing wrong with getting free products or services in exchange of promotion because that’s how blogging/social media works. The media doesn’t show the behind-the-scenes or how much work and time it takes to run a blog including your blog photography, social media, writing articles, designing your website, creating content for your platforms, creating graphics, etc.
Je n’ai jamais entendu parler de blogueurs à succès ni de bonnes choses que les blogueurs font dans les médias. La seule fois où j’entends parler de blogueurs (ou de youtubers), c’est quand il y a des drames ou des controverses qui sont tellement injustes à mon avis.
Il y a tellement de blogueurs qui ont des histoires inspirantes et réussies et qui sensibilisent à tant de sujets et de causes, mais j’en ai rarement entendu parler. Alors que si un blogueur a fait quelque chose de stupide, il y a tant de médias qui racontent cette histoire.
Il existe une idée fausse selon laquelle les blogueurs ne recherchent que des produits et des services gratuits. On ne peut rien y faire quand il y a des blogueurs qui ne cherchent que cela, mais cela ne veut pas dire que nous le sommes tous. Tant de blogueurs commencent leur blog en tant que passe-temps ou moyen d’échapper à leurs problèmes et lorsque leur blog prend son envol, il est tout à fait normal de recevoir et d’accepter ces opportunités.
Ce n’est pas parce que certains blogueurs font la promotion de produits/services qu’ils n’achèteraient pas/n’utiliseraient pas, cela ne signifie pas que tous les blogueurs feront la même chose. Tant de blogueurs ont rejeté des opportunités qui ne correspondaient pas à leur niche ou pour des raisons morales. C’est tellement dommage que les erreurs commises par quelques blogueurs représentent l’ensemble de la communauté des blogueurs.
En outre, il n’ya rien de mal à obtenir des produits ou des services gratuits en échange de promotions, car c’est ainsi que fonctionnent les blogs et les médias sociaux. Les médias ne montrent pas les coulisses ni le temps et le travail nécessaires pour gérer un blog, notamment la photographie de votre blog, les médias sociaux, la rédaction d’articles, la conception de votre site Web, la création de contenu pour vos plateformes, la création de graphiques, etc.

UNREALISTIC & FAKE PICTURES
Loads of people put blogging, YouTube & social media under the same umbrella which isn’t exactly wrong since they are all connected to one another but they are all different platforms. When something bad happens on one or the other, somehow the blogging community gets affected by it because of the fact we are all under the same industry.
As a blogger, social media platforms play a huge part when it comes to traffic and blogging opportunities. Even if you have a successful blog, most brands and companies will first check your Instagram or Twitter before contacting or working with you. With already thousands of influencers in this industry and the algorithm, it’s really hard to stand out from the crowd and gain followers.
With that said, whether you are a blogger or influencer you have to be creative with your pictures which is the only way to stand out and get to work with brands. Most of the times, social media gives the impression of having a “picture perfect” lifestyle and something completely unrealistic for young people to see which I don’t disagree with.
But I’m pretty sure most adults and young people know the difference between what’s real and not. They know that social media are only a highlight of people’s best moments.

Lorsque quelque chose de grave se produit sur l’un ou l’autre, la communauté des blogs en est affectée du fait que nous sommes tous dans le même secteur.
En tant que blogueur, les plates-formes de médias sociaux jouent un rôle important en termes de trafic et d’opportunités de blog. Même si vous avez un blog réussi, la plupart des marques et des entreprises vérifient d’abord votre compte Instagram ou Twitter avant de vous contacter ou de travailler avec vous. Avec déjà des milliers d’influenceurs dans l’industrie et l’algorithme, il est vraiment difficile de se démarquer de la foule et de gagner des suiveurs.

Mais je suis presque sûr que la plupart des adultes et des jeunes savent faire la différence entre ce qui est réel et ce qui ne l’est pas. Ils savent que les médias sociaux ne sont que le point culminant des meilleurs moments des gens.

NOT A REAL JOB
Jobs have changed drastically when you compare it to one or two decades ago. There are so many roles that exist now that didn’t exist in the past which includes blogging. So many people think that being a blogger isn’t a real job even if you earn money from it and turn it into a business/full-time job which doesn’t make any sense to me.
I’m pretty sure if everyone had the opportunity to work from home and do something they love, they would do it within a blink of an eye. A lot of people assume blogging is such an easy job and earning that much money from it doesn’t make any sense to them. How can someone earn that much money while talking about a shaving razor?
In some aspects it’s understandable because it’s not a job you’ve heard in the past, and the truth is most people still don’t know the ins and outs of blogging. When people can’t wrap their minds about something – instead of asking and gaining knowledge/being educated about it – they only know to make assumptions and say negative things which is quite sad.
Les emplois ont radicalement changé par rapport à il y a une ou deux décennies. Il y a tellement de rôles existants qui n’existaient pas auparavant, y compris les blogs. Beaucoup de gens pensent qu’être un blogueur n’est pas un vrai travail, même si vous en tirez de l’argent et que vous en faites un travail à plein temps, ce qui n’a aucun sens pour moi.
Je suis à peu près sûr que si tout le monde avait la possibilité de travailler de chez lui/elle et de faire quelque chose qu’il aime, il le ferait en un clin d’œil. Beaucoup de gens pensent que bloguer est un travail tellement facile et gagner autant d’argent de cela n’a aucun sens pour eux. Comment quelqu’un peut gagner autant d’argent en parlant d’un rasoir?
Sur certains aspects, c’est compréhensible car ce n’est pas un travail que vous avez entendu par le passé, et la vérité est que la plupart des gens ne connaissent toujours pas tout à propos du blogging. Quand les gens ne peuvent pas comprendre quelque chose – au lieu de demander et d’acquérir des connaissances/d’être éduqués à ce sujet – ils ne savent que faire des suppositions et dire des choses négatives, ce qui est assez triste.

A FINAL NOTE.
The only thing I have to say is I wish people were more open-minded about this topic. I guess we should share more of our behind-the-scenes so people could really understand the time and effort it really takes. I wish people would stop generalising everyone in the community because of some bloggers’ mistakes.
I’d say blogging is like an extracurricular activity, anyone at any age can do it. If it’s something you are passionate about, whether you earn money from it or not, you should be able to do it without anyone judging you. If you are able to turn it into a business or career, it’s even better!
At the end of the day, you are the one winning. You get to do something that you love and enjoy which is the most important thing isn’t it!
La seule chose que je dois dire, c’est que j’aimerais que les gens soient plus ouverts sur ce sujet. Je suppose que nous devrions partager davantage de nos coulisses afin que les gens puissent vraiment comprendre le temps et les efforts nécessaires. Je souhaite que les gens arrêtent de généraliser tous les membres de la communauté à cause des erreurs de certains blogueurs.
Je dirais que bloguer est comme une activité scolaire, n’importe qui, quel que soit son âge, peut le faire. Si c’est quelque chose qui vous passionne, que vous gagniez de l’argent ou non, vous devriez pouvoir le faire sans que personne ne vous juge. Si vous parvenez à en faire une entreprise ou une carrière, c’est encore mieux!
À la fin de la journée, vous êtes le/la gagnant(e). Vous pouvez faire quelque chose que vous aimez et appréciez, ce qui est le plus important, n’est-ce pas!

I never really tell people that I am a blogger because people cast an opinion of it so when people who are interested speak to me about it, it is really strange. I am getting better at telling people and once they realise I have a good following their tune soon changes.

Hi, I am completely, absolutely stand by your thoughts. Blogging, though may be easy, and wouldn’t requite any qualifications, it does take a lot of time and effort. And it needs to be diversifies, from social media and youtube.
You have rightly said, that we really need to have an open mind about this, now. We are well past 9-5 jobs, and ‘real’ jobs have indeed changed drastically.

Interesting and thought-provoking post for sure. Perhaps it is “why blogging in the first place?” I’ve always posted my blog entries on FB, Twitter and never have had any negative reaction from family and friends. Most of our family know I write. Most I find are indifferent about it. All have acknowledged it; some are more supportive and enthusiastic than others.
So, for myself, it comes why blogging in the first place. I’m not trying to be an “influencer” or such, nor do I promote anything. Although, I did get a day pass from an Ontario Parks Superintendent last year for a day visit at a local provincial park.
I work hard to my blog and writing like all do or most do. Perhaps at my age, I don’t particularly care what people think; whether they approve or not.
If my writing and blog evolves into something bigger and generates some level of income, yes, that would be wonderful. Not to that stage yet.
I guess the bottom line is if you love what you’re doing with your blog, I say damn the torpedos and keep doing what you do. The naysayers are likely jealous anyhow.

The judgment is real, that is for sure! I don’t talk about my writing or blog with my family, because it DOES come with negative feedback. My siblings think I have all this free time when in actuality, I make time for my family. I pause my book writing, or don’t post for a day. I don’t bring money to the table and that colours opinions, too. However it is still work and I’m glad for bloggers like yourself. The ones who try and change opinions, and speak their minds. I always get comments from my mom, sometimes she jokes, but now i am embarrassed because suze she sees nothing that way, everyone else might to.
Recently though, i was going to get the new samsung and the phone company employee asked if we had a business, i mentioned my website and it worked for a discount sort of thing. He later said what im doing is awesome!
I like when people say that in front of my mom, …its kind of like a “look i told you so” kind of thing.
I hope soon i can be more open about it and share it with more of my friends and maybe family too lol
Aw that must have been such a lovely moment! Speaking from my experience, it can be hard to visualise what blogging is for people who are older. They didn’t grow up with social media, YouTube or blog therefore they might not comprehend it at first. So don’t be embarrassed! The more you talk about it and explain to them, they’ll eventually get it, that’s what I did with my mum. Luckily she was very supportive from the beginning and now she even buys me flatlay props for my pictures! x

Unfortunately my mom believes its not a job because i dont have like a steady income but once i do, im sure she will start buying me props too heheh she will begin to get enthusiastic about it too!

Oh, I loved reading this post so much. I’ve had so many spirited discussions with friends and colleagues about me getting freebies. And I’m so tired of explaining that a freebie isn’t actually free because of all the work that goes on behind the scenes. You’re right, blogging is a very misunderstood industry and when all the media can do is focus on a few bad apples it makes it so much harder for the rest of us. Love this post, I can relate so much! I kept my blog a secret until my husband BETRAYED me and told all of our friends, hahaha. He doesn’t feel like I should be ashamed about it. They bring it up in conversation every once in a while which is SOO embarrassing, but for the most part I think my friends are indifferent. Do I think they talk about it behind my back? Yes probably lol, but I’m also at the point in my life where if they’re not saying it to my face, why should I care? They could also be not thinking about my blog at all!
To be honest, even though I’m a blogger, I still don’t really think of it as a “job” even though I know some people make tons of money doing it. But when most people do it as a side project/hobby while they’re going to school or working a 9-5 job, and like you said, when anyone can just start up a blog (which is a point you made that I never thought of), it’s hard to see blogging as a job, you know?
I think it’s also partly a generational thing too. If you tell someone in their teens-very early 20’s that you blog, they wouldn’t think twice because that’s what they grew up with.

I think it all depends on the way people blog. If you were producing great quality content whether it’s your blog posts, blog design, pictures and social media with creative ideas – it’ll be easier for people to view it as a job. But when you see someone not producing good enough content (e.g when you can see they didn’t put much time or effort into it) and getting paid for it, it’s really hard to see it as a job.
And I definitely agree on the part where it’s a generational thing. I’m pretty sure people my age would either be judgemental or indifferent about it which is another topic but they will get it if you were able to do it as a full-time job/career. On the other hand, it’ll be difficult for people who are older to understand. They might not get it and will be comprehensive at first x
I’m so uneasy talking about my blog that I haven’t told my wife that I even have a blog. Why ? Because the first words out of her mouth would be like, “So how much money does it make”? “Uh, none”. “What ! Blahblahblah” Think I’ll keep it to myself. BTW, great post.

I love this post! You’ve highlighted so many good points. I hate how narrow-minded and judgemental people are towards blogging. There are so many misconceptions about it. This is so important to say! I personally have told many people I have a blog, but I also try to keep my posts and social media as anonymous as possible because it’s a huge fear that a patient will walk in, see me and recognise me from my blog, and then discount everything I say or do because of it. I have such a tiny following and yet it’s a fear! Not to mention that I sign extremely strict contracts with regard to social media and I am always afraid that my blogging will contravene it! It seems like a clash of two separate world’s and it’s difficult to keep a balance

I read this last night but pretty sure I didn’t reply! I keep me being a blogger quite secretive from my family although a little less secretive than when I first started. I think because I have found myself as a blogger in terms of style and content, I am a less worried about being embarrassed. I think there’s almost this natural fear of someone finding your blog and who knows you in real life because it’s like finding someone’s actual diary haha.
I have let my close friends in on the fact that I do blog and if they choose, they check it out – that’s entirely up to them. I have some best friends who tell me that my blog is great and it’s nice to hear that from time to time. 🙂

This is such an interesting post and I really agree with so many of these points! People are definitely closed minded about it which is such a shame because why should anyone have the right to judge what jobs or even hobbies other people have?

People that don’t understand it, will judge you immediately which is very sad because we put so much effort in our work that we share! On the other hand, I still love to blog and I’m very happy that the community is able to encourage each other and hopefully in the future other people too! ❤

I am a Chinese Junior High Student YouTuber, also Blogger. I started my YouTube Channel on Aug. 2018, then I started my blog on Feb. 2019.
Recently, my English teachers around my school discovered my blog, and then there are 40 views of my site on that day.

I can really relate to this post. My sister disagrees with my blog and says it’s an unethical way to earn money. Plus she’s not into beauty at all and often says I’m “sad” for wanting to write about it! I don’t tend to mention it to her but whenever I do it always shuts down the conversation. I think a lot of people don’t understand the concept as when I’ve mentioned it, they ask what it is, or how I do it, and how I earn money from it. Much of the negativity is born out of ignorance! I’ve a feeling my brother looks down his nose at my blog too, so apart from my parents and husband (who support what I’m doing) my family aren’t really on board with blogging! x

I relate so well with this. I started a blog in 2016, and even when I had followers turned friend even to a large number, I still did not tell anyone. It was that little part of my life that gave me fulfilment, and my own little space I went to talk about my day, write, and interract with my friends with no insecurities to worry about since no one in my reality knew about it.
I stopped blogging on that site early this year. So much things had changed since when I started, so I decided to start anew.

I have never been as embarrassed blogging as when I did it during law school. Some law students would just be so judgmental, thinking that you choose to write blog posts than study. But eventually, I got the hang of it. I realized, why should I be embarrassed? Why should I be ashamed of something that I know I am doing for good reasons and purposes?
Apart from “destressing”, I started this blog to share a piece of my faith and self as a nurse, student of law, and christian. If through this blog I could reach and inspire more people, then I’d do it for the rest of my life. This is exactly what makes me proud now. And this should be the exact same reason for other bloggers to be proud of.
Bloggers and online writers are wonderful people because they make information readily available to people. They deliver inspiration and life lessons in the simplest and most “digestible” way. They are the reason why this information technology age is one of the best eras the humanity has ever had. 🙂

I always wanted to start a blog; I finally did so lately. I have talk to my friends and family about it, I quickly stop as I have felt little enthusiasm about my project. Are they waiting to see if I succeed? Well, I do not know… So I am very grateful to fellow bloggers to give me so much encouragement by liking or/and subscribing. Thank you to you all!! Interesting post! I tell people I am writer, which blogging is writing. I’ve never been embarassed by it. It’s fun and rewarding, IMO. I don’t write to make money or to have a lot of followers – I write to have fun. It’s the intent that matters.

Great article, thank you for sharing it. I have been very fortunate that I have never encounter negativity about blogging, quite the opposite. I do share it with everyone that I have two blogs, a cooking blog and my personal life journey blog. The support of family, friends and complete strangers is wonderful.

This was so interesting to read as I am just starting up my blog and abit confused in how it all works, I told my family about my blog and my boyfriend and they haven’t really took me seriously and think I’m just “being stupid” but this was really interesting to read and makes me feel positive about it all, I’m not at the stage to tell my friends yet but once I get going I might! 😊

I’m not embarassed about my blogging – just about self-promotion; it’s hard to toot my own horn. Still, I understand what you’re getting at – people in general think Blogging is no big deal, just as when I tell people I write spec fiction and they start talking about how they’d like to do that too. Until they actually try it, EVERYONE thinks that ANYONE can do it.

Oh I feel the same. Started with blogging after hesitating since years and still not confident to share it to ppl. In fact none of my friends or in my family know except for my husband. I think it’s just that ppl think there’s nothing much to do. It’s strange I’m talking to strangers about it rather than my closest frnds
